Default Who is running COP's?

I would just like to see what kinda stats we have on people running coil on plug conversions. One it will give us a better idea of what years people convert on, and two it will give me a few more people to ask about their setup so I can compare it to my own and resolve some issues.

So its a benefit to everyone.

you need another poll option
"got my COPs, just not on the car yet..."

I'm waiting to get my car running on MS first, and its a 94

i have a feeling that your wiring job might be at fault, I would take the set-up out and recheck all your connections to make sure there is nothing abnormal
what diagram did you referre to when wiring it all up, are you sure it's a 100% accurate?
Also, what ga wires did you use, at this point i would just try to elliminate any possibilities of
a. the coils being faulty
b. your wiring/saughtering job being faulty
c. that you did indeed use the correct diagram and ran the correct wires (can you post illustration of what you did)

18 gauge wires
Wiring is perfect, checked numerous times with a DMM
Used the diagram in the archive. I shared the +12 and the Grounds, no tach, so I have one plug instead of two.

All coils fire. Car runs perfectly when warm just not when cold, very rough warmup.

You are running MS right? It's going to be all in the settings somewhere. COPs won't change how the car runs hot/cold. (or most definitely shouldn't)

Same here, rather rehookup the car to MS as I had it running on it last year.

Car ran flawlessly before the conversion. I changed over to cops and had to significantly reduce my cranking PW's to get the car started, and now when it starts it runs like **** when cold.

People are converting to cops with no changes to any MS settings.

i see why this is eating you alive...its got me banging my head against my cubical wall (thank god its padded )

are you running highres? not sure if it would matter, but if you are you should advice/PW #'s from another high res user...

when you say car runns like ****, is it like its starving for fuel, or missfiring like hell, please elaborate a bit more here

[IMO]
ps-i'm still not happy with your ga choice for power and ground...especially ground
your trigger (yellow/blue) wires look sufficient

No running Hi res. Never had a reason to.

The car would idle at 13.1 afr, hell I could make it idle anywhere, I tried everywhere from 10:1 -> 15:1. It would hunt for idle(750 -> 1000 RPM), and thats all it would do for the entire time between ambient CLT to 150F. At 150F, idle just smooths out. The problem occurs only during warmup.

I have a log in my other thread, go see for yourself. After 150F, all problems go away.

I have never experienced anything like this. For those running COP's on 96/97 cars. Could you be a pal and throw up your MSQ for me please. It has to be something in the settings, I have no one elses MSQ to compare to. If it was the settings then it wouldnt run with the stock coils. I need to keep digging so I need to look EVERYWHERE now.

Email would also be great. slibus (at) gmail.com

Edit: At this point im willing to try anything. If you think its the power wires, ill go and separate the pairs onto their own power and grounds and join them at the plug.

whaaamx5, you know you might be onto something.

Technically speaking, what would happen if a ground was insufficient? If it could potentially influence how much current the coil could dissipate or generate then the problem could easily be caused by the ground. A weak spark because of insufficient ground will cause shitty combustion during cold running because it doesnt have enough energy to light up the fuel, then when the engine is hot it has enough power. I look at the grounds on the factory coils and they are huge compared to the wires I used so this could potentially be a problem.

To rule out all possibilities I am going to take out my harness today and run another ground to all the coils.

i really hope that solves your issue
trigger and tach (which you need not worry about) are ok at 18ga, i am running (will be once squirted) 12ga on power and ground, i would go as low as 14ga but not lower...
even if you have to go out and buy the 12ga it can't be more than $7-8 at a premium price tag, IMO well worth it if it will solve your problem
good luck

But wait a sec here, I just remembered. The wires on the factory plugs are tiny. I doubt its the wires now.

What I really need is the people who chimed in as running cops to chime in with what gauge of wires they are running.

Why doesnt someone with cops with a new car just do me a huge ******* favor and take a picture of their interface between the coils and the car.

Maybe I should have used both 12v lines and both grounds just like they came out of the car for the pairs.

Its gotta be the coils hands down. They are just not firing as hard as they should. The car only runs with super lean mixtures and at that for 10 seconds at a time, and backfires with rich mixtures.

To get my car to run for 10 seconds, I had to turn off my afterstart encrichment completely and reduce my Warmup to practically nothing.

I have a 97 and I'm only using one power/gnd off the coil pack connectors. Hopefully that will be fixed next weekend. As for the MSQ I'm pretty much using the stock MSPNP 9697 file with 3.5 and 2.5 dwell times for crank and run, respectively. The wiring coming from the coils is chopped off of a Celica harness.
