I have a greddy turbo. Been looking at the Mazdaspeed turbo for a little bit. I have read that it spools quicker and it hits the HP numbers I am going for (200). The Greddy is great and all, but if I could get quicker spool, I am more for that.

Btw, engine is 1.6L.

Would you sell and get the IHI or keep the greddy?

 

keep the greddy. ihi spools slower than a booger trying to roll up a wall. i own an msm, i know

 

Really..what the. I read people liking the spool better. I thought it was smaller than the Greddy too...which accounts for it's quicker spool.

 

Stick with the greddy. Plenty of memebers on this forum have really great numbers with modified greddy setups.

There is also a 19-T upgrade for them as well to unleash more power potential.

 

Keep the GReddy. 200 is definitely doable with the GReddy. Get a bigger DP and free flowing larger exhaust and you will see better spool. Granted, you'll never spool like a GT2554, but still respectable for a larger (relatively speaking) journal bearing turbo.

 

If response is your thing, and you don't wanna put the coin on a GT-series turbo, you can't beat a TD04 off a WRX. I get 10 psi by 2700 rpm even with a 2.25" exhaust. And on top I can tell I'm making close to 200 whp.

All you'd need hardware-wise is an adapter plate from your greddy manifold and a modified downpipe, which you'd need anyway to upgrade the crappy greddy one. Turbos are cheap, like $100 on the Subaru forums. You don't even have to clock the hotside.

 

I have an IHI, but the BEGi VC47, not the MSM type.

BEGi will swear up and down this turbo is BETTER than the IHI in the mazdaspeeds. Having seen the compressor map for mine, I'd hate to see something that produces LESS power up top.

I'm already planning a compressor upgrade. I say keep the greddy, and find the extent of it's potential.

 

Yes, 200 is "doable".

 

Keep the greedy. As far as I know, the IHI on the MSM turbo only fits the MSM manifold. That's why MSM owners have to change manifold if they want to use a different turbo.

 

MSM might be a cheaper option - is that why you're considering it?

 

No, I already have the greddy, just wanting more spool lower in the RPM's. But I am dealing with a 1.6L so that could be a problem too.

Well when is yours spooling? My friend has a 92 1.6 with the greddy kit (begi downpipe, custom intercooler etc), and it spools very quick.

Mine spools really slow. Not sure if it is just the DP, but I don't get full boost until 4k+.

 

MazdaSpeed seems to source different turbos for different cars. In the MazdaSpeed Protege, they use what is essentially a Garrett GT25r. That spools super quick, and I picked one up from the Mazda forum (Mazda Forums - Powered by vBulletin) for $300. Imagine a GT25r for $300. Do what I did.

Mine's currently making a lot more than 200. Dyno'd (after correction) at 213 last year, and I've done several performance mods since then. Probably around 230 now.

 

haha you got a stock MSProtege turbo for your miata..I should look into that too.

 

I would get the ETD manifold, IC, 440cc injectors, and megasquirt if you want that kind of power.

 

Pesronally I dont believe changing the turbo is going to be the answer your looking for. Just free up some pressure with the 3 inch exhaust and she will spool sooner and get some more power. What kind of boost control are u running.
