Props to the OP for doing something different, and those are pretty decent numbers from a 1.6...

In the UK, a *good* dyno operator will give you the printout with WHP on it, as well as one that has estimated FWHP on it. Or you may have to ask for it, rather than just the FWHP numbers.

Nobody really talks about the WHP, because the FWHP is significantly higher, all the manufacturers quote FWHP and everyone thinks bigger is better. Some Dyno operators do the full run down to calculate transmissions losses, but quite a few of them just pick an arbitrary percentage based on generic figures for FWD (17%?) / RWD (20%?) / 4WD (30%?) and use that to calculate the FWHP.

When I last had my car dyno'd (Dyno Dynamics) it was something like 240WHP and 285FWHP - so a 20% transmission loss, but it's many years ago and I can't find the printouts... There have also been reports of less scrupulous dyno operators inflating results artificially - from what I remember you can fudge one of the figures - ambient temperature, humidity or air pressure and it skews the results considerably...

The *perception* (right or wrong) in the UK is that numbers from the USA are 'somehow' inflated compared to ours - that one of your WHP is equivalent to one of our FWHP - so about 20% higher.

As for Max Power quoting BS results - that's because it was Max Power magazine, and spotty 16 year olds love shitbox cars that claim to have 600HP with a bolt on turbonator intake and a 1500W sound system ;)

I can get on MX5nutz or youtube right now and show people say: "na6 with wrx TD04 @9psi making 240whp". It's not just the magazines. Different regions do not have equivalent HP figure claims for the same car. At the end of the day the stopwatch is king, and it easily allows us to know what regions believe what.

Sure - I believe you - some people are just boastful and full of **** :D (or don't understand the difference between a wheel and a flywheel) It also seems that a lot of the 'max power' generation have grown up and adopted the MX5 as their chariot of choice, there's a lot more slammed stanced POS here then cars that are ever set up for performance :(

Certain dyno's here are known to read high or low - even when they should be the same (in theory) - as you said earlier, really it's only useful as a before / after comparison for tuning / upgrades etc. There's very few dragstrips here to be able to check with a stopwatch. Once my car is back setup and properly mapped I'll do some virtual dyno runs - it seems that the US guys find VD pretty accurate compared to a real dyno, so in theory it should be accurate this side of the pond as well, and I can do a UK Dyno WHP vs. Virtual Dyno comparison..
