Comparison Chinacharger 2871 vs Garrett 2554R vs Garrett 2560R

I couldn't live with the Chinacharger anymore. Drivability is horrible and I hated driving it. So I went off to buy a Silvia S15 turbo which is bascially a Garrett GT2560R. I am a very happy man now.

At 4000rpm, I gain about 70bhp at wheels and that's how a Miata should drives :) The Chinacharger cost me USD$350 and the Garrett USD$680. In my opinion, it was every single cents worth. I was also having problems boosting 14.5psi on the Chinacharger but no problem with the Garrett at all despite running the same hardware. Most importantly, I also noticed that the GT2560 is making more power at some point despite running the same boost.

The car is a 1.6 NA Miata and they figures taken are all with the same modifications. The only difference is ECU tune to run the turbo properly.

Here's the dyno figures(all figures at power at wheels):

Nice. Other's have had no problems whatsoever running a chinacharger over 14psi which leads me to believe you had a shitty one (they ARE known to be completely hit and miss) but congrats on the newfound torque

wow, major difference.

I plotted my last dyno against yours...I guess the T3 design was copied much better:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...1&d=1295973225

This makes sense, cause on paper its similar to the 2560. But wow that 2870 is weaksauce in comparison.

What was the setup like with the 2554? I don't see how that would spool slower than the 2560.

chicksdigmiatas 01-25-2011 11:48 AM

I guess there is a huge production variance between them then. The chinacharger I got from Bell doesn't spool like a 2871 or larger. I don't know what the differences are. IE: setup, manufacturer, so on and so forth. I will hit the dyno when my clutch finds its way in.

That's because there's more than just 1 "replica" turbo made in China. I assume the one you got is the "2854" right?

Right now we are discussing the "2870".

nismo, can you link to the one you got?

nismo502 01-25-2011 12:14 PM

There you go, this is the one I got

The 2870 chinacharger plotted in this thread spools worse than my Godspeed 3076 .86

So yeah.........

Vashthestampede 01-25-2011 12:51 PM

Hopefully this IS a hit and miss thing going on here. I still have the 2870 Chinacharger I got back in May sitting on the counter, just as new as it came to me.

Now I'm wondering if maybe I should just rebuild my Garrett and stick with that seeing I already had good luck with it.

I hated my chincharger everyday and that's why it lasted me for less than 2months. Then again, they are a matter of hit and miss, if yours performs as well as Braineack's, then why not?

You know, I've been debating the chinacharger the whole time since I bought it. I went through all the trouble of getting all the lines sorted out, drilling the compressor housing, clocking it, removing the wg and tacking up the flapper door, etc etc, but I still was debating it. Seeing this thread almost makes me want to rebuild my Garrett and just put that back in the car.

The 2870 barely wanted to fit with the manifold and dp I had Abe make to match my Garrett. I don't know why it doesn't want to fit, but it being a pain in the ass is what stopped me from getting it in that day. Then enter broken wrist and snow, now the car sits till spring. At least I have some time to think about it. Glad to see the cold hard facts for the same exact turbo I have on paper though.

nismo502 01-26-2011 01:43 AM

Well, let's just say that putting the Chinacharger in is the top of my list of regret on my Miata. Like you, I had to go through quite a bit of hassle to get it fitted and I didnt expect results to be that bad. 50-80bhp across 3500rpm to 5000rpm is lot of difference. I am glad the saga is over.
I am just wondering, from you built thread, you have all the quality parts, what got into you to decide on a eBay charger considering that the charger is one of the most important part of the equation?
But hey, there are good chinacharger out there and you maybe luckier than me :)

Braineack 01-26-2011 08:22 AM

If my turbo spools like that I'd hate it too, what's the rest of the setup like? was the 2554 on the same setup or was the exhaust changed after?

Yeah after looking at the chart I can only imagine how much better the car drove afterwards. Big difference I'm sure.

At the time the chinachargers were all the rage, everyone HAD to get one, jk. To be honest, at the time I really didn't have the cash to fork over for a new Garrett unit and the thought of re-building mine was in the far back of my brain. I guess I just figured I would take a chance. The day I went to install it was the last day I touched it. The fucker fought me and wanted to do everything but slip into place, so after enough knuckle busting for the day I gave up. Not soon after that my broken hand ordeal happened and now snow is here.

I'm sure it really is a hit or miss type thing, but do I really want to take the chance of putting it all together only to have to take it back apart. I'm already happy with the drivability the Garrett gave me, as well as the numbers. So the more I think about it I'm probably just going to re-build that turbo and use the chinacharger as a pencil/pen holder. :)

Did the same guy tune the car for the Chinacharger that changed the tune for the Garrett?
