Greg, any particular reason you chose not to use shims on the stage 2 pump? AFAIK it comes default with 2 of them to increase oil pressure a bit. Wouldn't that have helped with the VVT at lower rpms?

No, shims would have no affect on pressure below the relief valve pressure.

They just raise the max pressure allowed, correct?

Perhaps you've got loose clearances/tolerances and it takes the pump a tad longer to catch up. Got an oil pressure gauge?

Just the stock 1.6L setup. I've got an aftermarket OPS but it's not wired up to MS yet.

Just for reference:
Here's a fully built vvt BP with EFR6758 I recently tuned also running the boundary pump. Has no problem hitting target

Correct. The relief valve is functionally the same as a wastegate on a turbo. Limits max pressure possible.

^What Pat said. They make no difference below max pressure.
