ApexOnYou 11-04-2008 05:05 PM

So my goal for this season was 11.999.. *Video*

And I hit it! Like, exactly haha. What are the odds?

11.999 @ 112.05 MPH, 1.785 60ft, and I missed 5th gear around 1000ft...

Unfortunately that may have been my last run for the season, the track closed right after that run and I am not sure if I can make it back before the track closes up for the winter. I really think that would have been a 11.8 run if I had stuck 5th but I am still damn happy that I hit 11.9, it was my only goal for this season.

Needless to say, I have pretty much abandoned the LSX swap plan in favor of a built BP for next season.

johndoe 11-04-2008 05:12 PM

awesome. So after the build you shooting for 10's?

BenR 11-04-2008 05:21 PM

Have you done anything more with the car?

Did you get a datalog of the run?

Congrats on the time. That's amazing. You just made hero for the day status.

Stein 11-04-2008 05:25 PM

Nice 60'. Congrats on the 11's.

patsmx5 11-04-2008 05:26 PM

Fanfuckingtastical. Congrats on 11's man, must be nice. Can you post your VE table and timing table? I'd like to see both as I'll be running a turbo similar to yours.

thesnowboarder 11-04-2008 05:55 PM

so fast! Congrats on making your goal!

ApexOnYou 11-04-2008 06:20 PM

For some reason I didn't take any logs from that day.. I'll post up my tables when I get home.

Shooting for low 11s next year, but I think i'll secretly be shooting for 10.9 haha.

Zabac 11-04-2008 06:42 PM

You can do it!!!
Shoot for 10.9 or don't go out to the track at all....

miatamania 11-04-2008 06:51 PM

There was a 10.9 miata on pinks the other day...not sure if it was all out or what. My uncle called me the other night just to inform me of this...lol.

Congrats man. :)

ApexOnYou 11-04-2008 06:52 PM

Haha

boileralum 11-04-2008 06:59 PM

Congrats!

Was it red? I know Racing Concepts LS1 Miata was on Pinks all out but I think it was running 11.8s at the time. I know it has nitrous now.

So I have to get door bars next year if I want to go past 11.5. Thats pretty weak.

levnubhin 11-04-2008 07:46 PM

Thats awesome dude, congrats!

Congrats on the runs. Can't wait to see where you take it next season.

zoom2zoom 11-04-2008 08:07 PM

Are you running a 99 head? If not, would you see a big difference swapping one in?

viperormiata 11-04-2008 08:27 PM

Congrats man! I didn't think 11's were possible on stock internals, PROVED ME WRONG!!!!!

Makes me wanna buy a gt2876 now:giggle:

samnavy 11-04-2008 08:29 PM

I'm just gonna throw this out there...
The FM gearing calculator shows that with the factory ratio'd 5-spd and 3.636 gears, you get at least 130mph in 4th with any 15" tire.

The ring&pinion+labor to install is probably gonna be in the $800... something to think about.

I'd love to see the actual performance results of somebody doing back to back to back 1/4 runs with a 4.1/4.3/3.6 on the exact same car to see the difference.

I've already got the 3.636 r&p for my NB build and know it's gonna be great on the street, but I'm really curious about the track.

Nope, stock head. I would imagine a noticable difference with a 99 head judging by a side by side comparison I saw somewhere. Maybe Paul would know?

Keeping it in 4th would definately be nice. I have never played with gearing before, but that is definately something I need to look into when I go with a different rear end this winter.

lordrigamus 11-04-2008 08:41 PM

Sweet dude! I smell a 10.99 on the horizon!

ApexOnYou 11-04-2008 08:43 PM

Can't wait to dyno, I am very curious.

zoom2zoom 11-04-2008 09:00 PM

The 99 head could mean better response and 10-15 more hp.

ApexOnYou 11-04-2008 09:09 PM

Really, thats it? I would have guessed more. Well guessed 20 anyways.

zoom2zoom 11-04-2008 09:36 PM

I was being conservative, initially I was going to put 15-20.

miatamania 11-04-2008 09:44 PM

that and head work on a 99/00 would equal a lot more.

zoom2zoom 11-04-2008 09:50 PM

Maybe with a worked 99/00 head and gears you could hit that 11.5??

ApexOnYou 11-04-2008 09:51 PM

I plan on doing a 99 head swap eventually but its not really high up on the list.

pschmidt 11-04-2008 09:54 PM

Congrats! 11.99 is moving.

I'm coming after you next season ;)

ApexOnYou 11-04-2008 10:00 PM

Do it!

There needs to be more Miatas in the 11s haha.

zoom2zoom 11-04-2008 10:08 PM

My turbo will be capable of 11's, but the stock 1.6 may not be.

ApexOnYou 11-04-2008 10:25 PM

I keep missing posts

I think 11.5 would be cake with those added in. Not sure how well the stock block would hold up to that though.

mazda/nissan 11-05-2008 01:48 AM

oh ma god, i drive a rashecar :eek5:

dvcn 11-05-2008 10:14 AM

Congrats!

Great driving and obviously great car setup. I'm going to guess that you make 290-305whp on the dyno.

What boost level was that run made at?

Splitime 11-05-2008 10:31 AM

I do so need to join you next season at the strip. I know I suck at drag and it really isn't my thing... but every once in awhile it is pretty fun.

We can have an RA1 battle... even though you are already quite a bit faster than I.

mikef85 11-05-2008 11:09 AM

Congrats on the 11.9. Shoot for 10.9 now, thats a good goal.

I'm hoping to see a 10 sec pass pretty soon. We'll see if I make it there or not.

blue turbo mx5 11-05-2008 01:49 PM

Mike, I see Apex talking about a 99 head. How many additional hp would you guess you made with the BEGI intake manifold?

BTW Apex, really nice job! :bigtu:

If I were in your shoes, I'd port and polish my head and put in the BEGI intake manifold or maybe the one they're currently developing with braineack's assistance.

zoom2zoom 11-05-2008 04:16 PM

Apex, remind me of which ECU you are running.

I think paul picked up ~15hp.

No Clue, Never ran my engine with the factory manifold:giggle:.

What tires/60ft?

Savington 11-06-2008 03:22 AM

You inspired me to get launch control and flat-foot shifting hooked up. Jesus fucking hell christ flatfoot is badass. :O

ApexOnYou 11-06-2008 09:11 AM

I'm pretty sure I have had flat shift disabled for a while, but launch control is the shit.

BFG Drag Radials and a 1.65 60ft netted me an 11.30

ApexOnYou 11-06-2008 10:14 AM

Sick. Did you ever have any stock internals fail with that setup?

I have new found respect for Mazda engineers that's for sure. Stock blocks with cast internals holding up to track abuse at 17+psi is awesome.. Especially considering these things run 16s stock haha.

samnavy 11-06-2008 10:30 AM

Does anybody have an opinion on how final drive gearing (higher or lower) might help/hurt times? I understand every shift is worth 2-3 tenths... it would be interesting to see how times would change if you matched the final drive so you could cross the line in 4th at about 7150rpm.

If you wanted to run around 11.5@120mph, you could do it with a 225/50/15, 4.1 R&P, and the 5spd... gets you 120mph@6950rpm. Your 60ft time will make the difference, but with some drag radials, should get you there. The longevity of your 5spd will also be in question. Drag racing the 6-spd is a losing proposition.

ApexOnYou 11-06-2008 10:36 AM

I thought the 6spds were fairly bullet proof?

Does anyone know what fails on the 5spds? I have lost syncros but I have yet to actually lose a gear.

Savington 11-06-2008 01:05 PM

Problem with the 6 isn't strength, it's ratios. I have to hit 5th to trap 100mph in my 6-speed. 115mph is redline in 5th.

I lost 3rd gear in my 5-speed. Stripped the gear itself.

ApexOnYou 11-06-2008 01:25 PM

:noes: I don't want to hear that!

Did you happen to get any pics of the internals?

I might get a chance to head to the track once more this Saturday if it doesn't rain/sleet. I think I need a fire jacket now but hopefully they will let it slide, I think the tech guy starts enforcing the 11.X rules at 11.5. There is a lot of small annoying things you need at 11.9 as well, like steel valve stems? Wtf?

Marc, are you familiar with the NHRA regs?

cheesecow1 11-06-2008 01:40 PM

just spotted this thread nice times, and with ra-1's you can still tear up the turns oh miatas

Never got the tranny completely apart, but when we cracked the case without a gear puller about 20 teeth fell out. The car would idle, clutch out, with the stick in the 3rd gear position. I could feel the shifter drop smoothly into the gate, like a perfect double-clutch heel toe shift, but it wouldn't go anywhere :bowrofl:

ApexOnYou 11-06-2008 08:40 PM

Damn that sucks. I assume you were in boost when it failed?

Sorry! I put them on my desktop right after you asked and I forgot to upload them.

I took screen shots, they are rude and crude but they get the job done. The untested cells are pretty obvious. I never got the car to idle right, but having the idle cells all the same *almost* fixed my problem. HiRes should fix it completely but I never got around to flashing it.

Feel free to tell me what looks bad, I'm still learning this stuff.

Oh I also have the spark map pretty conservative after 6300 because I'm a pussy.

Savington 11-07-2008 04:02 AM

You can take your 6300rpm values and add 2 degrees with total safety to the 7000rpm cell. Beyond the torque peak which is around 5000-5500, the motor is less prone to detonation as you get higher up (lower cylinder pressures as RPM increases).

Savington 11-07-2008 04:04 AM

Hard 2-3 shift down an onramp. I hit 3rd, declutched, and it sounded like the transmission exploded.

M-Tuned 11-07-2008 11:06 AM

I blew a lot of 5 speed trannies racing at the track, I honestly lost count of how many. Never hurt a stock motor at 300-350hp, but most of the time I ran built engines in the 450+ range.

ApexOnYou 11-09-2008 12:07 AM

So what was your fastest ET?
