What tires/60ft?

You inspired me to get launch control and flat-foot shifting hooked up. Jesus fucking hell christ flatfoot is badass. :O

ApexOnYou 11-06-2008 09:11 AM

I'm pretty sure I have had flat shift disabled for a while, but launch control is the shit.

BFG Drag Radials and a 1.65 60ft netted me an 11.30

ApexOnYou 11-06-2008 10:14 AM

Sick. Did you ever have any stock internals fail with that setup?

I have new found respect for Mazda engineers that's for sure. Stock blocks with cast internals holding up to track abuse at 17+psi is awesome.. Especially considering these things run 16s stock haha.

Does anybody have an opinion on how final drive gearing (higher or lower) might help/hurt times? I understand every shift is worth 2-3 tenths... it would be interesting to see how times would change if you matched the final drive so you could cross the line in 4th at about 7150rpm.

If you wanted to run around 11.5@120mph, you could do it with a 225/50/15, 4.1 R&P, and the 5spd... gets you 120mph@6950rpm. Your 60ft time will make the difference, but with some drag radials, should get you there. The longevity of your 5spd will also be in question. Drag racing the 6-spd is a losing proposition.

ApexOnYou 11-06-2008 10:36 AM

I thought the 6spds were fairly bullet proof?

Does anyone know what fails on the 5spds? I have lost syncros but I have yet to actually lose a gear.

Savington 11-06-2008 01:05 PM

Problem with the 6 isn't strength, it's ratios. I have to hit 5th to trap 100mph in my 6-speed. 115mph is redline in 5th.

I lost 3rd gear in my 5-speed. Stripped the gear itself.

ApexOnYou 11-06-2008 01:25 PM

:noes: I don't want to hear that!

Did you happen to get any pics of the internals?

I might get a chance to head to the track once more this Saturday if it doesn't rain/sleet. I think I need a fire jacket now but hopefully they will let it slide, I think the tech guy starts enforcing the 11.X rules at 11.5. There is a lot of small annoying things you need at 11.9 as well, like steel valve stems? Wtf?

Marc, are you familiar with the NHRA regs?

cheesecow1 11-06-2008 01:40 PM

just spotted this thread nice times, and with ra-1's you can still tear up the turns oh miatas

Never got the tranny completely apart, but when we cracked the case without a gear puller about 20 teeth fell out. The car would idle, clutch out, with the stick in the 3rd gear position. I could feel the shifter drop smoothly into the gate, like a perfect double-clutch heel toe shift, but it wouldn't go anywhere :bowrofl:

ApexOnYou 11-06-2008 08:40 PM

Damn that sucks. I assume you were in boost when it failed?

Sorry! I put them on my desktop right after you asked and I forgot to upload them.

I took screen shots, they are rude and crude but they get the job done. The untested cells are pretty obvious. I never got the car to idle right, but having the idle cells all the same *almost* fixed my problem. HiRes should fix it completely but I never got around to flashing it.

Feel free to tell me what looks bad, I'm still learning this stuff.

Oh I also have the spark map pretty conservative after 6300 because I'm a pussy.

Savington 11-07-2008 04:02 AM

You can take your 6300rpm values and add 2 degrees with total safety to the 7000rpm cell. Beyond the torque peak which is around 5000-5500, the motor is less prone to detonation as you get higher up (lower cylinder pressures as RPM increases).

Hard 2-3 shift down an onramp. I hit 3rd, declutched, and it sounded like the transmission exploded.

M-Tuned 11-07-2008 11:06 AM

I blew a lot of 5 speed trannies racing at the track, I honestly lost count of how many. Never hurt a stock motor at 300-350hp, but most of the time I ran built engines in the 450+ range.

ApexOnYou 11-09-2008 12:07 AM

So what was your fastest ET?

Emberghost 02-09-2009 12:58 AM

That's a badass video, I always like seeing the view from inside. Congrats on reaching your goal, that car can scoot for sure. =]
