Spec Miata Turbo Fuel limited

Here is a video of a pull done at Oscar Jackson's dyno ( ex-Jackson Racing) on a 1.6 liter with 1.8 liter injectors, stock FPR and fuel pump. With the fuel restriction, boost must be limited at higher RPM as you can't deliver enough fuel safely. This is a first attempt at variable boost with a manual Boost controller, stock Greddy WG.
We are building 3" downpipes for the Greddy starting next week, which should improve the spool up considerably.
Next week we will be testing the Rotrax supercharger on the same car for comparison.

Omnitech ecu? Why not MS... offers same.
Greddy kit for a spec series? Where do you plan on supplying all those kits from as the company is dead?

I still get a kick out of this spec miata turbo idea.

drgoodwrench 01-30-2009 02:39 PM

The Omnitek ECU is straightforward in its programming ( ms of injector time vs mathematics), and retails with the IAT, MAP sensor and PnP harness for the same price as a PnP MS.

Greddy USA says no problem supplying Mazda with their kits. Personally I'd prefer a split outlet seperated Exhaust manifold going to a twin scroll turbine GT2550 that hangs below the head with a straight shot exhaust and external wastegate, but cost is A BIG factor in designing the kit.

The closing their doors and going bankrupt Greddy says no problem?
or did something in their closing their doors plans change.

Make the spec guys build their own MS's. Costs under half the PnP option :p

edit: from some site/homework... appears Greddy USA says they are ok. Wierd, I'd have thought the companies would be a bit more linked with production/supply etc.

Are you going bigger injectors?

drgoodwrench 01-30-2009 05:28 PM

The idea is to run stock OEM injectors to limit HP. The Races will be just long enough so a lean set up may get you through the race with no pit stop, but if you run fat, you'll need to pit.
By limiting fuel delivery, you can let folks play with all the other parameters all they wish with no need to police it. Just check Fuel pressure, fuel type (spec fuel, so Spec gravity ez to check), and injectors. We may actually label all injectors and "mix them" before each race and pass them back out just before Grid time.
The less to police, the less hassle at impound. I've made the case to let them use any turbo or Supercharger set up they want....

You're running out of fuel on top, so you're going to add a 3" downpipe to the equation to require more flow and more fuel?

Anyone else highly unimpressed with where this idea is going?

kotomile 01-30-2009 07:30 PM

If I were standing up this series, I might try an intake restriction rather than fuel injector limitations. Seems easier to enforce, plus handing out fuel injectors just before a race and then having the teams install them in a hurry sounds like a recipe for some well-done Miatas. Add to that the temptation to run more fuel pressure to compensate for the limited injectors...

drgoodwrench 01-30-2009 07:33 PM

Going to a 3" down pipe will mostly improve spool rate. And we don't "run out of fuel", as the ECU is fully adjustable, so it's up to you to tune it as lean as you dare....
Intake restriction has been used in the past and can be defeated in many ways. Fuel limitation keeps you honest because the consequence is not getting caught, its blowing your motor....

turbobluemiata 01-30-2009 07:52 PM

you should sell these "3inch greddy Downpipes" :eek5:

drgoodwrench 01-30-2009 07:54 PM

once we cost them out, they will be available..

LOL. has he tried fitting a 3inch pipe in the motor bay? i know me and turbo blue had tt downpipes at 2.5 and they were snug

good luck...

Definitely a challenge....

urgaynknowit 01-30-2009 11:07 PM

if u do it, i want one......
ill sell my new tt down pipe for a 3 incher anyday

I am 100% for the idea of a spec turbo miata class. Sadly, there are sooooo many problems with the idea I don't expect it to take off. Here's hoping though.

Some one say 3" DP.......count me in!

drgoodwrench 01-31-2009 10:42 AM

Appreciate the encouragement, we'll see what can be done!

patsmx5 01-31-2009 11:39 AM

Another +1 for an intake restrictor, not a fuel restrictor. Who wants to swap out fuel injectors every time before a race? Recipe for a fuel leak. Besides, there will be variances in the actual flow on an individual basis. Plus who knows if you get a dirty injector? What if the other team savataged their injectors before handing them in? So what if they people got money they can afford to keep a few spares and risk running lean?

Anyway, I think a restrictor would be easier to enforce.

Toddcod 01-31-2009 12:59 PM

Hmmm. Aleast my brother's roomate got a greddy car. I'm out on this one. I already spent too much to change now. Why not just use stock greddy kits, stock 1.8l injectors and run 6 psi.
Your fuel will be safe, everybody is the same, and Have the boost controller under the hood, with tech making sure the cars are at 6psi.
