Default LFX E39 Tuning with HP Tuners

There is info on this spread out across multiple build threads on here, but I wanted to consolidate it into one place for reference and questions/answers. I know a few of you guys have already gone down this path. Please post up any tips or resources you found helpful. From what I have read, tuning this engine is a bit difficult.

Saw someone post this up and it explains why the E39 is a bit more complex than most ecu's. Good primer for what you are getting in to.

Just got an HPT MPVI2 for $372 on Amazon with 2 credits included. Seemed like a good deal.

Starting from scratch here. My MPVI2 gets here this afternoon. Do I need to do anything other than disable VATS to get the engine to start with a bone stock oem E39 ecu?

You should only need to disable VATS to get the engine started.

Depending on your tuning experience, you may want to reference this thread right away as well as there is a lot of helpful information for beginners here

Once you get the car started, you'll have to start logging data. This is where you need to turn to the HPTuner VCM Scanner software. There's a ton of information out there depending what aspect of the file you are trying to tune, but this will get you started with how you want to set up histograms and configuration files.

This is the section you're going to want to review heavily for LFX related questions.

Thanks!!!

Are the oem o2 sensors good enough for tuning, or do I need to get a dedicated wideband?

Edit: Has anyone found any LFX tunes in the HPT database worth using?
