Default Looking for thread or reading on how to tune an N/A miata

Seems like every time I am about to turbo the 99 NB something pops up. Guess I'll have to settle for the turbo goodness my NA was.

Well lets just say I have been thinking about the future of the car. It has around 166,xxx mi on the body and a bit less on the engine (great leak down numbers about 2 months ago). I know the motor was replaced by mazda due to the 99 bearing/crank issues, and the p/o freshened the motor up a bit. But it might be fun to do something like the 949 rental with a 01 bottom end eventually and have something to beat, rinse, and repeat as my DD.

With that preface I currently autox the car but am not so worried about "classes" like I use to be (although I am considering STR, but would be out if I ever got a 01 bottom end). With that said a few questions.

1) What piggy backs can advance timing? I know the E-mange Ultimate can advance timing (can a blue with the software upgrades advance timing?). I need to see if a MS running in parallel is considers a piggy according to rules. If so a reverant/brainy built 99 MS would seem the best bet.

2) I have tried searching here and on the big board, maybe I am using the wrong key words, but does anyone have a good thread to read for information on tuning a N/A miata. Maybe moreso a 99-00. I am just not sure what wisdom would say for playing around with the timing. What is safe what is not. I know a bit of timing could be given with a static advance (like I did on my old 1.6 before it had the link).

How coincidental. I just recently tuned my car naturally aspirated while gathering the final parts for my turbo installation. It definitely has more spunk than before; nothing crazy though.

Were you only looking to tune your timing advancement? I would suggest the Ultimate and AEM F/IC over the Blue as I am positive that it can only retard the ignition signal. I spoke with a GReddy tech in-person last month about this, so hopefully I remembered correctly. Besides, they provide better resolution as far as piggybacks are concerned.

While I may not have a thread on tuning these cars, I do have my results posted here: Final tuning results w/ 315cc's and Pump-91 <<
Without adjusting my base timing, I was hoping that the negative airflow correction would provide a "natural" advancement. Therefore, my fine-tuning was done at the injector level.

You can always go with the older adaptronic.

Have a great day,
