Well... Sounds easy, yes... But I read so many horror stories on here about MS tuning problems so I am trying to have my ducks in a row before I pass the point of no return haha

Well, even if you can't get it totally dialed in you should be able to drive the thing home safely assuming you aren't trying to boost ALLOFIT.

Stock '91 TPS (assuming you have a manual) is just a throttle switch.

The Wells unit is a potentiometer to feed variable voltages to the MS to indicate throttle position.

Completely different animals.

I'm going to be running NONEOFIT haha... Installing the turbo set-up in the spring. Right now i'm going to install the MS/wideband so I can learn the ins/outs of tuning and be more comfortable when the time comes to boost it!

Gotcha, thanks! Thats what I was thinking.. I am trying to source a new OEM TPS for a 1.6 so I have a back-up if I screw mine up lol

Ah you should be fine then, just install a base map for the car and you're driveable, maybe not optimized, but enough so that you can drive home.

I purchased Tunerstudio's full version also, so I should be able to get a drivable tune after running VEAL for a few minutes

Ok back at it again today now that I have a spare sensor. Which wire goes to which pin on the stock connector? I know I read a post from Brain before, but can't find it now. Also, is this thing mounted upside down? The rotation on the sensor is not the same as the arrow on the plate. If I flip the sensor, I dont understand how the shaft will be able to connect the sensor..

*Edit* Found Brain's post after a little more digging

Bump.. Any idea if I have it mounted the correct way in my picture or not? The rotation of the center does not match the arrow on the plate... So will I need to flip it?

hornetball 11-21-2013 01:07 PM

There is a clear picture of how I mounted my old TPS201 to the baseplate in this thread:

Wow I think im going to get that sensor that you used to replace the tps201.

Blah... really would rather just use this tps201 and get it done..

Here is my concern. If I flip it to make the rotation the same as the arrow on the plate, im not sure how the rod will grab the sensor. From the back side, it dosen't look like it will come in contact with the little tab. There is a recessed groove that the front side has.... I wonder if this is even the same sensor everyone else has been using.

You're right. It looks like they changed the design.

You need large, triangular tabs that project into the shaft area. You end up cutting/filing one of them to fit the half-moon shape of the Mazda throttle shaft. Here's that picture again:

If you look closely, you can see the single, triangular tab that protrudes into the shaft area. Not sure if this older design TPS201 is still available though.

Damnit... Back to Square 1 with the sensor. Guess the one I have wont work. There goes $40 down the drain lol

Just check with railz on here, he sells the BMW TPS with a pre-wired connector and it works fine. Just plug n play.

Nice just sent him a PM thanks.

Started playing around with the sensor I have today and I think I might have come up with something that could work. I took a nut to our bench grinder and made it round-ish. Then I put a notch on one side, and cut through on the opposite end (Another notch wasn't enough to make it sit in the sensor, so I had to cut all the way through). Then I filled a portion of the nut with some JB weld.

This sort of gives it that "Half Moon" shape to fit the shaft. It might need a little more JB or it could need a little sanding.. Guess I wont know till I test fit it on the rod.

I also set the sensor up on the stock sensor's plate. Just need to Solder the connections once our mechanic is in the garage to allow me to borrow his iron from the tool box. I'll keep you guys posted on how it all works out lol.

Haha yeah I really want to get up and running on MS already... It's been sitting at my dest collecting dust for over a month now! So far so good though! I just need to make sure the JB-Nut fits onto the shaft. If not, i'll do some sanding or add a little more JB lol
