Default Standalone install effecting airbag deployment?

A friend recently had a quite nasty accident and collided with the central reservation of the motorway with some force but neither airbags deployed.
He puts this down to running a fully standalone Adaptronic which has disabled the airbag module but for the life of my I just can't see how.
Is anyone familiar with this?

the adaptronic has nothing to do with his airbag module.

Although I fully appreciate that, my concern is that the stock ECU wiring in some way powers the airbag module? Again I can't see anything in the wiring diagram but wanted to double check before fitting a MS3.

What year nb? Maybe the newer 01+ share wiring between the module and ecu but the older ones do not.

Yes, an '03 NB2. I currently have an '00 NB1 which is probably why I can't find anything in the wiring diagram..
