Hey everyone, it’s become time for an engine rebuild on one of the MSM’s. Can you guys help me figure out exactly what parts I’ll need to purchase. I’m a pretty experienced mechanic but I work at a shop, i just know how to do the rebuild I’ve never had to choose parts. The MSM rebuild kit on FM seems like a good place to start so I’ll just need to source the rotating assembly. Before purchasing anything I’ll pull the motor and strip it down as well as send it to the machine shop to get done up and checked for cracks and what not. I understand how to choose bearing and rings I just don’t know is MSM pistons are different than say a BP4w and I assume they are. Yall are the pros so I’ll let you tell me. I’m going for full stock build. I have other Miata’s if I wanna build high hp. All the MSMs will remain beautifully stock!!!

 

So are you replacing the rotating assembly? Are you getting new pistons? If so why? Was the engine damaged, or just high mileage?

 

Hoping to not replace the rotating assembly, I’ll let the machine shop tell me. Something will need to be replaced for sure as I totally lost compression on one cylinder. Engine had 230k miles. Now I’m planning on either getting a kinugawa turbo or the BNR upgrade(I’ve been looking for someone who has something positive about the kinugawa). I’m also doing the MS3 ECU. I would like to hit 230-250 hp but very reliable power. If you have any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. I’ll also do injectors but will be looking to you guys to choose which ones.
