2.0...ish build

Since my car doesn't even have 200whp, I decided to build an engine swap out with my current stock motor once it is built, and keep the same cooling and turbo setup. KEEP IN MIND...I was raised under power lines on a strict diet of paint chips so if it ever gets retarded you will know why.

I'm sure the question to the effect of "why don't you swap it with 50 gajillion times better motor if you are going to spend that kind of money," the answer is simple, I still want the motor to look like a stock miata engine.

95 bp block bored out to 84mm
Supertech 84mm 8.6:1 pistons
Wiseco 84mm rings (I read on a forum once the Wiseco Rings work better)
Manley connecting rods
OE Crankshaft
Boundary Engineering oil pump
ACL bearings
ATI Dampner

The Head

Stock 94-97 head, polished and ported,
Cams are still very debatable, I was just going to put some OE cams and let megasquirt offset the timing but if anybody has any recommendations that a tried and tested not browsed and googled I'd be willing.
+1mm supertech valves
supertech valve springs
polished and ported OE intake manifold
Skunk2 throttle.

Dump that Head and get a 99-00 or VVT Head. If you are going to dump money into cams and headwork then start with the better casting, otherwise your just wasting your money.

Yeah every penny you spend on the 94-97 head is a complete waste, compared to the the benefits you could get from starting with a 99/00 or 01-05VVT head.

Maybe not completely accurate but hearsay (voices in my head) mention that a well flowing ported BP head only flows as good as a stock BP4W/BP6D.

the bp4w looks very similar to the bp05, and in addition to the flow you can convert to a better trigger setup. win/win

+1 on BP4W as a starting point.

I happen to know a guy selling one. *wink, nudge*

So is the 99-00 motor better overall, less the fact it doesn't have a pre-drilled oil port, Or am I mixing facts?

The improvements are in the cylinder head. Block is the same but the 99-00 had higher compression pistons, which you are replacing anyway.

So...here is a question...one of the types that will pull my intelligence into question...How hard is it to set triggering/wire the triggering to work with my ms2pnp? Is this even an option or would I have to get a new engine management system (ms3 or the 99-00ms)?

dleavitt 05-18-2016 09:58 AM

Shouldn't need a new EMS. I don't have any experience with the MS2PNP myself, but it should be pretty straightforward to wire the new sensors in.

Another option is to just use your NA CAS on the NB1 head. No wiring required, but you theoretically lose some accuracy with regards to timing.

It's all in the mega thread.

this one doesn't pull your intelligence into question

this one definitely does

Switching to the ckp+cmp (that the 99-05 uses) is trivial on an MSpnp2. Using VVT (01-05) is not possible using just an MSpnp2.

I has vvt tuner collecting dust.
