Adjustable Cam Gear and Camshaft Snugglespace Hugglezone
I have my new big turbo en route.
My big turbo is actually a real genuine big turbo with a 66mm compressor and a .91 A/R turbine housing. My plan is to pull all the tricks to try to attain the best spool and power under the curve possible. I will be using a quick spool valve and also pre-compressor water injection. I will also put on an adjustable exhaust cam gear and retard it to help the turbo spool. I'm also considering camshafts. I know more airflow = more power but what would be the best way to get more airflow in lower RPMS (3000-5000RPM)? Would it be best to stick with the stock camshafts? If I put in a mondo big cam, will it screw up my spool? The overall goal is not numbers or drag times- in short I want the car to be a total beast on the road. If I lose 30hp peak for 80hp gain under the curve that would probably make me happy. Cam reccomendations? |
Usually from experience the bigger the cams the more the power band goes right. Kelfords are really, really quality. I love mine, idle is a little rough with 272s but sounds awesome, and the power keeps climbing. If you're planning on revving north of 8,000 I recommend these.

a 66mm compressor is big now?

You have to ask yourself how much setup change you are willing to do. Monster cams means supporting mods everywhere, including gearing. |
What other changes? I already have 3.6gears. Not gonna go above 8000rpm.. Stock bearings FTL |
How high can you rev the car? What head work do you have done?
|
Fm Valve springs Port n polish +1 intake n exhaust valves Could theoretically go 8500 but am just afraid for kablooue |

Sell it. Will be putting up my whole hotside for sale once the new turbo is in the car. That will include GT3071 with ceramic coated turbine housing, S5 cast ceramic coated manifold, purple tial 38mm wastegate, 3" stainless steel downpipe. |
infinitely adjustable intake manifold.

I have jtothawhat's old cams and saw spool almost 500 rpms sooner than with my stock cams. I never had my car running properly with the new cams but it defiantly had better spool for some reason.

I just read this nice little camshaft faq:
http://www.streetracersonline.com/articles/camshafts/ I think I will give Megacycle (integral) and also Paeco cams a call tomorrow. Here is the Paeco link: http://www.paeco.com/Mazda%20Miata%2...obe%20Cams.htm Paeco looks cheap. This cam of theirs sounds good :): INTAKE: 42/82 EXHAUST: 80/44 DURATION: 304 LIFT: 422" |
I had cams ground locally for cheap ($300 set) and they more than met my expectations. Doing it this way also lets you sit down a really fine tune cams that will work with your setup and headwork.
They are not custom profiles. We dug through hundreds of existing profiles he had on file to find what we wanted and matched two cams together. Iirc they come from an old Aston Martin and lotus from the 70's. Ignore total duration. You want to find out what the lift/duration is at like .050 and the opening and closing ramp speeds. My cams are in the 310* total duration but you wouldn't be able to tell if you listened to my car. .050 is around .207/.213 degrees respectively and 8mm lift. |
Falcon...That is a really mild cam, what is the stock degree/lift?

the 2871 and 3071 both have a 71mm compressor... and those still aren't "Big" turbos. oh i see, you quoted the inducer like a n00b. That wheel you speak of has an 87mm exducer... |
