Default Broken Motor Questions

Unfortunately i blew a hole in my block somehow at the track this weekend. I have an 89 miata with a built vvt swap. With the bottom end being done, I do not exactly know what my options are. If the head is good, I would like to keep it. I don't really have time and space to gather too much information as I just had to get it towed immediately so its sitting at a regular mechanics shop. I was just curious to see what some of you more knowledgeable people would do in this situation. Thanks in advance.

What exactly are you asking?

Is the hole from a rod poking out the side?

Take the cam bearing caps off and see if there is any signs of metal or other trash getting up there. If that looks good pull the head and check combustion chambers. If those are un damaged check for signs of bent valves. If that checks out take it to a machine shop and get it measured and rebuilt.

The block sounds like its toast.

I am assuming it was a rod that did it and the block is done. I am pulling the motor now and am going to check the head. I hate it because I just do not really have a plan of attack is all.
