25mpg's from an 18 year old car.....that sucks. Come on what are you expecting....the difference between you and your friend would be driving habits. Enjoy the driving experience and forget about the mpg. I never understand these threads: a convertible does not yield the best fuel economy...especially one that has early 90"s tech.

I dont think driving habits are the reason since he likes to bounce it off of the rev limiter...alot. Also the engine isnt 18 years old its only 8

The engine could have been rebuilt yesterday. It's the technology that's about a couple of decades old.

Yes, but if it got 30 on the highway new, gets rebuilt and gets less then 30, then what gives?

Depends on what's rebuilt, I guess. You can have all shiny metal, with a bunch of old sensors and wiring.
MAF, O2, TPS, CTS, etc, all play a major role on MPG.

Also, there are things like injector pintles, cat clogging, incorrect wheel alignment geometry, and stuff, too.

Until a month or two ago I got a pretty regular 25mpg per tank of gas, but now I'm around like 20 on a regular basis (several tanks), got an oil change, it didn't help at all. I've heard that the "winter blend" of gas can yield poorer mileage, but would it be that big of a change? I've tried running on regular and mid grade, no change. Also it seems like my exhaust tip has more soot on it then before. There is no check engine light on.

I'm going to start replacing o2 sensors and since my car is a '97 it has two, one on the exhaust manifold and one after the cat. I've read that if one of them has gone bad and is causing the car to get worse mileage, then it is probably the one on the manifold, any truth to this? Any other ideas to help with mileage besides driving style? Btw, driving style stayed the same before and after the mpg drop.
The engine is stock.

Thanks.
