Catch can recomendations
 

Anybody have any a recommendations for a decent quality vent to atmosphere catch can? I'm having trouble finding something that's not either total made in china crap, or over-priced/over bling. Pegasus racing and my normal go-to motorsport suppliers do not seem have much available.

​​​For miatas, overall height of less then 10" seems ideal, -10 AN or ORB inlets, screw on canister for draining (not sure why petcock type valves are more common), internal baffling.

The radium looks nice, although it appears a bit over engineered, and at $300 is a bit much for a can. Vibrant makes one that looks decent, but could also be junk..

Is that $300 for their catch can or AOS? $300 sound steep, but I’m used to vendor pricing...

Agreed. For the competition catch can it's $290, $250+$40 for the filter. The smaller 8oz standard can is $150+$40, which I guess is not too bad.

My main hesitance with the radium cans is that I would like to have two inlets available, just to be able experiment with various venting configurations.

Junk or not, they pretty much all do the job. I like the All-Star catch can from Jegs stuffed with some copper kitchen scrubbers.

I personally just installed a DaveFab VTA can. Can't speak about results since I haven't run the car yet, but I'd like to believe the internal baffling is good given they have turbo and track experience.

I've got the Moroso one they make for Miatas, it doesn't vent to atmosphere though. It hasn't caught a lot of oil on the 3 events I've driven with it, that's a good thing but makes me wonder how necessary it really is. I've used the aluminum Jegs cans and lightweight plastic cans (Jaz?) on other cars, they are kind of tall but cheap and work fine if you don't mind fabbing a bracket.

I have a moroso can, with two inlets. It vents to atmosphere. It's tall but it fits on the firewall, clearing the shelf. The only pita is I have to pull it out to drain it, as the petcock rests on the shelf. I only get an ounce or so every couple thousand miles, so it's no big deal.

I like that DaveFab one. I am curious to know how useful it really is though.

They've only had one version as far as I'm aware and they run it on their shop's turbo track car. That was good enough for me to buy one. Apparently they've sold hundreds of them and I haven't seen any complaints.

ps: +3 there's a port on the bottom for a drain valve

Not sure they all work the same, I​​​​​​ would think the filtration would vary design to design, I would like to avoid engine bay continually being coated in oil mist :)

I've seen the davefab one, 10mm barb fitting inlets, works with the factory barb fittings on the valve cover, but Negates the benefits of ported valve cover baffling and -10AN hoses.


Looking like I may have to just design and build my own.

Not trying to act as a davefab rep here but the barbs are just threaded in with some PTFE tape. My plan is to replace them with -10 fittings when I begin heading to the track more often.

Custom never hurt anyone though

I think I called or emailed them one time and they said they do offer 10AN fittings for the catch can instead but you need to call to specify it.

I won’t resurrect you DIY thread, but want to know how much liquid are you collecting when you don’t wash the engine bay before draining?

I ask because my catch can collects almost nothing. @Godless Commie

I get a pretty surprising amount actually, almost a liter.
More than 90% is water (guess I was wrong when I had chalked it up to engine washing), and I really don't drain it very often.

I also fill my can (~1/2 quart) with mostly water in no time at all. I daily my car, year round, I want to put a heated mat on it with PWM control so I can hold it right at around 80-100C. I'd almost never have to empty it then, I bet. If I were to get another can I was spending more than $20 on I might look for one that taps into the coolant lines.

I wonder if mounting mine just behind the radiator is why it keeps dry. People say put it where it’s cold so the fumes coalesce, but maybe that is not ideal on a VTA.

MY goals were to keep oil out of the intake (even fumes) and to stop oil from dripping on the exhaust manifold from the little filter mounted on the valve cover. Mission accomplished.
