Cool oil cooler ideas
 

Ok, gearing up for the track I've purchased all the pieces that Savington pointed me to for a decent oil cooler setup - mocal sandwich adapter w/ 180* thermo, BSP fittings for the sandwich plate, Push-lock fittings and 10 ft of hose, and Tru-cool cooler.
So now I'm having trouble deciding on a good way to mount it. I would like to keep the oil cooler out of the front bumper mouth - the intercooler and radiator already use that space, plus I'd like to not have it in the path of a possible front end collision (car is street driven) that would then dump all my oil onto the road.

So, any ideas welcome! Pics of other cars' oil cooler locations encouraged - does not need to be a miata, ideas can transfer over to the miata.

mount it behind the pass headlight, then put a scoop on that side above the cooler to get air flow to it?

or you can mount it almost anywhere you want then buy some small computer cooling fan and mount it to the oil cooler to suck air though it!

just mount it to the front bumper... it's the next cool thing to do..be ahead of the curve.

Plumb it infront of the AC matrix in the cabin so you can super cool it :D

I would have identified the space then bought the cooler to fit the space. IMO the ideal place is between the base of the (stock size/located) radiator and the under tray. This is how most circle track cars run them. That means the wide short oil coolers are readily available and provide excellent cooling for the width providing extended exposure to the oil. For example:

Nascar oil cooler AN-12 lines 4"x5"x30" w/fittings $49- no bids. Even the buy-it-now is less than the cost of the hose and fittings.

Or buy the $10 shroud below and stick it where it'll fit.

That one is a sensational deal- but there are a bunch there, and they come up all the time. You can get stellar deals on just the lines too. Just make sure you flush the stuff out before putting it into service.

This is what a friend of mine said - apparently old porsche race cars did this... probalby the exact opposite of what I want to do though ;)

pretty cool idea.

Nose mounted in front of radiator. This is the LS1 car so there is no intercooler to deal with , at least not yet :giggle:

looks like I[ve got the same Ebay 25row cooler... My miata is track only, so I don't need the parking lights (or headlights for that matter)... and obviously it'll be ducted in pretty well. Half of the opening will be ducted to the radiator, the other half to the cooler. If you had to retain the lughts, then you'll be stuck putting it somewhere in the radiator area. Vmount the intercooler and put the cooler up front, or vice-versa?

That's the route I took but I'm fabbing some ducting to get better flow and give a little protection.

Well its missing the splash shield ;)

So you run the stock splash shield over your oil cooler? Flow much?

This setup is from FM so its not my car. BUT from what I understand they cut out the slash shield in that spot so there is air flow to the cooler. I trust FM know what they are doing.
