Looks just like mine.

Swabbed the intake manifold side with a q-tip after a track day. There was a bit of gunk there, maybe its not filtering enough? Should it be completely clean?

deezums Sep 12, 2015 09:25 PM

Ideally, yes. I don't think you'll ever get it 100%, especially not for 10 bucks.

How much is in there?

greeenteeee Sep 12, 2015 09:27 PM

I don't think it'll be 100% if it still routes to a vacuum source.

deezums Sep 12, 2015 09:35 PM

What exactly is the point of a catch can if it doesn't go to a vacuum source?

EDIT: added pics.

Not sure but after running it like this for 80k miles on a K20, I saw vented catch cans on Miatas removing a vacuum source altogether and venting it to atmosphere. I looked into it for a while from dealing with the breather tube on the exhaust side when making a CAI but decided it's best to keep the vacuum source.

my K20, PCV to IM:

They may have removed the PCV altogether, thereby not needing the valve so who knows. I do know that oil vapors do not enter/exit through the exhaust manifold side.

To catch oil so it doesn't go wherever the exit hose on the catch can goes. Whether that's a little filter, the engine's air intake, or atmosphere. I used to have a little filter on the breather on the exhaust side. After 6-8 months of daily-ing with 17 PSI, it would saturate with oil and drip on the turbo manifold. I would just clean the filter when I smelled it, but a catch can would have made that problem go away.

If I wasn't trying to have vacuum on the crankcase I would just run some hoses into the frame rails.

It was damp, not bad though.

flipped the spring to the outside, and found a circlip that fit the barb fitting. if its not enough spring pressure, I can move the clip to the next barb.

Wanted to post that this didn't work. I finally got it installed and im driving the car enough to get some oil in there now. I was idling the other day with the hood open, showing off, when I noticed the catch can was bubbling through the drain, at about 30kpa. So I threaded the bottom piece for a screw and sealed it up with an o-ring. I have been unscrewing the whole catch anyway and never once used the drain. But for those that want the convenience, get the valve aidan is using.

The one from home depot has been working for me (I think) now that it has dried out its not nasty and frothy anymore.

I also just got around to adding another one on my drivers side.

I'm in the middle of building a driver side catch can. I messed around with the air/oil separator there but noticed that some oil gets sucked back in during vac conditions.
So I decided to make a 2 way separator. I'm not sure if it really matters...
Also if you guys run to sears they have a huge version of these separators with built in brackets. I'm running one of those on my pressure side and its working great!

2 way separator?

leboeuf Apr 19, 2016 02:36 PM

Yeah basically balanced between the two ports so either can serve as an input or output.
I've seen some setups with 2 check valves (one way draws fresh air other separates oil) but decided that was too much.
I'll put up some pics in my build thread tonight.

where is your PCV side going?

The answer is literally in your quote.

I cant see where the hoses are going so enlighten me.

There is a catch can in the left side of the first picture.

Now I see it. Had to look harder. And just to clarify, you aren't running VTA on the pcv side because you want it to create a vacuum correct? According to this http://gearheadsmiataclub.net/vB/sho...h-can-breather you don't need to have a closed system if you don't want to.

The Husky bowls are just threaded on, right? Neither my roommate's nor my bitch mittens can get this thing loose. It's TORQUED.
