He's a welder? Is he a good welder? With tools? Barter?

Welders around here are never unemployed long and make decent coin.

Judging by his miata, probably doesnt know a welder from his ass.

He's supposedly decent. Unfortunately the one experience I have with his welding skills include him welding a 3/8" aluminum post to a friend's radiator. He had it near perfect, went to tweak it, and it melted.

I might ask him to weld my drain bung onto my pan, as that's one of my intended projects this winter when I replace my clutch.

Back on to this engine though, do y'all think it's worth it to waste a quart of oil by dumping it straight through? I want to wash out as much as I can.

Or should I just run the first batch of oil for 10 miles and dump that.

I'm already planning on putting a big magnet on the oil filter, and doing a 10-50 mile oil change.

Wait....If you have rebuilt the engine why would this be an issue? Are you saying you didn't fully tear the motor apart and lo thoroughly clean everything? From what I remember the parts that exploded were the piston....which is aluminum....which is non-magnetic. If you didn't THORUOGHLLY clean all the nooks and crannies of that motor after it had a piston skirt come apart....stop....take it back apart and clean it out.....or you are going to be doing this job again soon. There is no way just poring a quart of oil through the motor is going to clean it out.

Might be worth it to see if he will ask you for money... perhaps it will put the right words in your mouth next time he blows it up and tells u to rebuild it for free again.

You heard me right, I was just paranoid. All the big stuff, oil pan, block, head, oil pump, and valve cover were cleaned professionally, as well as by me. It's the little stuff, lifters, cams, any scratch in the oil pressure release valve, etc., it all scared me.

But I went for a drive today and everything worked great. Oil pressure was good, no bad noises. Compression measures 180psi. I'll take it. Final clean up and a double check with his new wide band, and it's outta here.

That's awesome. I'd babysit this dude for a while though if I were you. At the first sign of fuckery you need to intervene, lest you become the guy "who fucked his motor up repeatedly".

It's beautiful when they fire up the first time, isn't it? The 5.3 I put in my shop truck fired so fast and so perfectly the first time I hit the key that it actually surprised me. Electronic fuel and spark control are amazing things.

(It's such a contrast to the old stuff that we see so much of in the shop.. Trying to get the thing lit long enough to frantically adjust the timing and dial in the carbs, all while listening for weirdness and looking for leaks? Fuel injected stuff is so much less of a Drama Queen.)
