double check timing, or take a pic of the cam sprockets for me.

ok thankx ill do that ...

Most likely timing, although as a last ditch effort switch plug wires 1&4 and 2&3, easier than pulling the valve cover.

Sounds like a case of E=I and I=E perhaps? The photograph should be taken from the front, so we can see the cam gears and the plate behind them. Rotate the crank to #1 TDC before you take the picture.

Though I can't imagine how you'd get the ignition timing to be dead-on in that scenario...

your cams are not correct.

the left one should be I and the right one should be E both point as straight up as possible.

Yeah, if that was taken at #1 TDC, then the cams are way off.

Here's what you want:

the BP/B6 motors is not an interference motor, random non mazda people love to state otherwise but your fine.

If this image isn't in "useful saved posts", then it should. Along with the number of timing belt teeth between the sprockets.

curly 10-03-2011 09:15 PM

The more important one is the cam lobe direction at TDC. I've always been fine doing the timing belt unless I've taken the sprockets off. Why Mazda made it so you could put it on wrong is beyond me.

miatauser884 10-03-2011 09:35 PM

I thought there is a notch on the cam that should be pointing at 12 when at . Then place sprockets accotdingly. Seemed to work for me.

The short answer is that before you start the job, you need to have the engine at #1 TDC, and then just don't rotate anything once you've begun. On interference engines, this rule is absolute.

curly 10-03-2011 10:14 PM

We use these little Star Trek communicators called Voceras at work. The moron (read: geek) that designed them decided to make a charger that would fit the unit forwards or backwards, although it'll only charge when facing forward. Same with the battery, except not only can it fit backwards, but it can fit upside down as well.

Another example of idiocy.

they are designed that way so they only need to tool for one pulley, they fit either side.
