Alright, for those that are following this fairly depressing thread I have a update.

Took a trip over to Magnum Machine and met with Kurt. He did the bottom end and is a really great guy. We did a leakdown test and discovered the following:

1) most of the exhaust valves are leaking like a siv
2) There is a leak between cylinder 2 and 3, headgasket
3) rings look good

So, this is pretty good news for me. The fact that I made 265hp on this is amazing and really shows what the engine is capable of. Also, as some have suggested we were spraying too much meth. Jeremy confirmed this at FM.

The head was rebuilt by clearwater heads in Florida. Obviously if you're looking for headwork, this is NOT the place to go.

So, the plan is.... Use this as a great excuse to get a monster flowing 99 head. Going to call FM in a bit and order one.

To all that have been putting out suggestions on this issue I truly appreciate your help. This has become a pretty long project but I'm excited about the performance that I'll get once this thing is finally done.

You are only spraying too much for the 263whp that you got this time around. Once you have things fixed and turn up the boost you'll be fine.

Update, ordered a head from FM, should take a couple months to do. It will be a 2004 Mazdaspeed head with +1 SS valves, FM springs, etc. :)

The new head should put you in the "Holy shit it's fast:eek5:" category.

Got the head off today, can't find anything at all obvious showing the leakage between #2 and #3 either on the gasket or the surfaces. Next step is to clean the block surface and put a straight edge on it and feeler guages to check for flatness. The new head is still a couple months out though but hey, maybe the Boundary COPS will ship by then! :)

Well I'm still waiting for the FM uber head to arrive, It will be here on Wed. While waiting of course the shipwrights disease has set in with full force. I figured, while i have the head off I might as well do the coolant re-route. Got the BEGI unit and it waiting for the head to come. I also decided that I should have done a oil cooler during the first phase so that has been installed, It's the FM Setrab setup. Also installed a ATI damper. Definitely need the right tools and patience on the damper install. It's a interference fit and went on nice and tight with arp lube.

While waiting for the head I went ahead updated the shitty AGX's with AFCO's. I got the rears installed today and am waiting for springs to do the front. I'm going to run 750F 450R with no sway in the rear. I am running a larger fuel pump so decided to replace the factory FPR before it became a problem. $230 bucks in AN fittings, SS hose, 5/16 hardline - AN adapters, and a FPR and I'm happy with the results.

Last pic is of turbo hopper, I think the cat ate him shortly afterwards.

Hot_Wheels 12-26-2009 09:51 PM

why an 04 head? im new so.. are you going to use a standalone to control the vvt?

magnamx-5 12-27-2009 02:20 AM

MSM heads are vvt-less as far as i know.

Savington 12-27-2009 05:11 AM

TBQH you should have done a VVT head and a Hydra/AEM/Adaptronic to control it. I bet the non-VVT heads will be pretty much obsolete within a year as people start to figure out the VVT and what it's worth.

no! it's new and scary!

I still want to try the VICS 99 IM with VVT.

Correct, I have no use for the VVT and the MSM head was built with turbo in mind and has a more aggressive cammage.

The ECU is on the list but the list is scary:

big wheels/tires and fender flares
fastback/wing
ECU, either adaptronic or hydra

Holy crap. This went from "I really didn't want to spend money to upgrade from the link" to "ordered a built head and Afco's from FM". Hit the lottery?

Will be very interested in new results.

I know, right. Well it helps that I'm not paying private school tuition anymore and my main vehicle is now paid off so have some good cash flow now. As long as my daughter doesn't decide to get married anytime soon I'm good to go! :)

Took advantage of a sunny day on Sunday and cut/cleaned/sanded/painted the valve cover for the adjustables. New head will be here tomorrow so I'm finishing all the little stuff that's easier when the head is off. Oil cooler is in but I need to finish tightening the fittings once the hose routing is spot-on. Need to wire the oil temp sender that is now in the drain plug.
