If the wheel is out of balance, those speeds will flex and fatigue the shaft in short order.

Super thick turbine shaft fail.

Good bye ultra baller turbine wherrl

pusha 06-03-2012 04:53 PM

how did you fit your sawzall in there?

soviet 06-03-2012 05:01 PM

Happend during autocross run. Was in boost and I heard a little noise and boost was gone. It was not a loud SNAP and actually took like 5 seconds to realize there was no boost (lol).

Housing looks clean with no signs of scratches or anything. I'll take the turbo out later today and take moar pics.

Gonna talk to Full Race tomorrow because *APPARENTLY* its still on warranty. Purchase date is June 16, 2011.

18psi 06-03-2012 05:03 PM

where is that picture the nutswingers kept posting comparing the borg shaft vs garrett shaft?

shuiend 06-03-2012 05:04 PM

So Fae what were saying about EFR being godly and never breaking? He was not even on track and it broke.

forreal. I don't think I've yet to see even a cheapy eBay turbo fail so hard. :loser:

soviet 06-03-2012 05:08 PM

I thought that maybe some object made it through the combustion chamber, but then I would have a broken blade - not a missing turbine wheel.

No i was talking about airwerks not efr

Faeflora 06-03-2012 06:12 PM

And not even any flat shiift or launch control!!

Sentry 06-03-2012 06:19 PM

Airwerks are so cheap and awesome.

I would never buy an EFR just because they cost twice what they should. Like the idea behind them though.

18psi 06-03-2012 06:22 PM

For the record my comments aren't meant to say that the EFR sucks, just that people are over hyping them WAY too much and only time will tell if they'll really prove to be a success or a giant failure.

Sentry 06-03-2012 06:32 PM

Mine are. :D

I dunno, I just can't justify 2+ grand on a turbo that an 800 dollar one and 200 dollar wastegate and 200 dollar BOV can perform as good as.

It's all in a neat little package, sure, but that means nothing to us since we are blessed with room in our engine bays.

Welllll it DID spool realll nicely. Gt30 power with GT25 spool is win

Sentry 06-03-2012 06:41 PM

I'll give it that.

soviet 06-03-2012 07:09 PM

Its also closer to $1500 than 2 grand. I'm happy that everything else is fine. Everything I actually planned for is working out.

Unfortunately I DID NOT PLAN FOR MY TURBINE WHEEL TO SHEAR

Sentry 06-03-2012 07:25 PM

Not for an 8374 :)

I've already pretty much planned my 2J build, just need to you know... Buy parts and actually do stuff to the car. When I was planning I took my sweet ass time deciding what turbo to go with, and an EFR8374 was like 2200 bucks for twin scroll with wastegate.

Crappy luck about the turbo, the faster you rebound from a fail the better it will be.

Nope. I'm 95% sure it was mostly intact because for the next 50 miles there was some rattle in the exhaust. It stopped about 10 miles from home (turbine wheel was freeeeeeee!)

:) reminds me of when I ingested a screw...no way in hell you couldn't miss that noise and I know exactly when it left the engine, turbo, and exhaust...but no missing turbine blades, just bent one slightly and caused the shaft to bend as well.

when this happened, the passenger didn't even hear anything. I heard a small *pop* that's it. It made no extra noises afterwards, just a little bit of rattle when the car was starting.

Right now the only thing I fear is waiting for months on a new turbo due to supply issues. I don't think there will be issues with replacement considering the information I just dug up.

soviet 06-04-2012 12:45 PM

The last 6 digits of my serial number is 110025. I think it's safe to say my turbo is #25.

18psi 06-04-2012 12:49 PM

Have them replace it with #69

Thank you for the info. I'll get this over to production and get back to you shortly.
I'll call them back later if I don't hear by like 5pm (3pm their time).
Basically I want to know if I can make my (already paid for) track day June 23-24.

Just to update this thread.

I talked to Jon @ Full Race yesterday and promised me an RMA. I called him up again today, and sure enough, he sent me the RMA information. Now I just have to send the broken turbo. That's taken care of and went very smooth (so far!). Expected delivery date for replacement is Mid-August - a date which I'm pessimistic about. I'm a consultant, I know how estimates work.

If you read my thread, you know that Bryce offered to sell me his BNIB EFR6258 since his project is taking forever.

So while on the phone with Full Race, I asked - how I would ensure that Bryce's turbo has the turbine wheel issue fixed?

Short answer - you don't. I was told that there have been no new EFR turbos in the country since approximately Fall 2011. That means every EFR 6258 turbo out there is possibly subject to this spontaneous failure. I didn't inquire if this issue affects the larger frame turbos.

What am I going to do? I'm not sure. I'm going to drink a little bit more liquid courage and probably buy Bryce's turbo anyways. I mean, what's another $1500 into a 5-digit budget project, right?

Bryce's turbo is serial 110021. Mine is 110025.

It's fine that you can't justify it, but get your facts right. It's a $1450 turbo, not a $2000 turbo. It doesn't perform "as good" as an $800 turbo - the cheapest Garrett DBB is $1k, and the EFR knocks it out of the park. No Garrett turbo comes close to the same combination of low-end torque and high-end power.

I'm not expecting people to cross-shop them against Chinese turbos, but they are worth every penny of the $1450 BW asks for them.

soviet 06-05-2012 09:08 PM

Also I would like to say that I love EFR to death. Garrett actually sent me an email saying that want to help me out and that a GTX2860R would fit my application. I could do it (probably get a cheap-ish GTX that hasn't been out for 3 months yet). But frankly, I would have a sucky 40-year old technology internal wastegate that wouldn't satisfy my 30psi goals. I would have to get a BOV. I would have to go back to the garage and get dirty.

I just did 5 months of that and I *don't* want to go back. I want to drive my car. Next week. It's glorious. It makes me happy. Sourcing a fabricator to weld a BOV fitting doesn't make me happy. Waiting for parts doesn't make me happy.

I really wish there was more transparency in this issue so at least I could plan for it and be ready. As of right now I'm stuck dead in the water with my only options being
a) bleed money
b) go with a sub-par setup (personal opinion)

I like Garrett and would totally rock the hustler setup. But that means drilling inconel bolts for safety wire. Getting an EWG welded onto my manifold. Getting an EWG pipe welded to downpipe. Getting a BOV. I'm tired. I don't have a lot of money left. I have a house that I just bought and it needs maintenance (for real).

FYI, that's the most accurate date I've heard in months. Last time I talked to FR was in the spring, and they were quoting "4-8 months".
