Engine build advice for combined daily & occasional track warrior

Hey guys,

I recently sold my dedicated track pig as I wasn't really getting much use from it. I am now focusing on building a fun boosted daily that can handle the occasional track day (probably around 6-10 days per year in reality).

The car is a 1998 NB. The main goals here are good economy and reliability. To keep things fairly reliable I am making use of a lot of factory Mazda bits.

Here is what I already have for the new build:
  • 1994 NA 1800 block with the oil feed port
  • 2002 NB sump + MBSP
  • 1998 NB crank + complete head
  • 2004 MSM/SE turbo manifold, exhaust, lines, water pump inlet, AEM intake + turbo fitted with a 15T compressor wheel
  • TODA chromoly flywheel
  • 2002 6 speed gearbox
  • 40mm alloy radiator with good ducting

Other stuff I intend to go with:
  • Wiseco 9:1 pistons
  • Eagle rods
  • VVT oil pump
  • Coolant reroute
  • Welded -10 drain fitting on sump
  • Everything balanced

I intend to run the turbo at approx 1 bar of boost, maybe up to 250hp at the wheels.

Do you think this is a good recipe for a rock solid daily including driving it quite firmly at the track? Anyone got any long term stories regarding forged pistons in a daily?

Apart from properly sorted engine management, injectors and clutch, can you think of anything I may want to consider?

Cheers

sorry, can't help:fawk:

How are you mate?

I'm in the same process at the moment.

Good thread here...well I thought so

So you sold the pig huh?

Did you land up sorting out what you were gonna do for management? We never did skype ya know.

Hey Derek,

In the process of selling the pig, got no tow rig now anyway so it is a no brainer.

As for management I am probably going with a HKS F-Con iS as Danny is getting good results on his cars and they both drive/start/idle like factory management. I love full standalones on track cars but on a daily it's too much hassle.

I am going with CP pistons as I couldn't get the Wiseco pistons in 9:1 CR.

Make sure you share your experiences and I'll do the same. :giggle:

Cheers

ARP head and main studs?? not required but wouldnt hurt while you have it open. radiator, engine mounts, turbo, tubular mani, 3" dp and exhaust

I have a fairly conservative goal and the costs were starting to blow out so I've decided instead to use a low mileage bottom end from an NA then just give it a new oil and water pump and call it a day.

I'll put my NB head on it with some ARP head studs, and fit the MBSP and sump.

Cheers
