it appears that the rods and pistons are major items that need to be upgraded to make power north of 250whp.

My question is first does the crank typically need to be upgraded?
Can you achieve 300+ with just rods while using stock piston? Or should you also do pistons as well?

What head work do people typically do?

Whoa you're a crazy man! I've never heard of anyone doing 300hp before, i don't think there's a concrete upgrade path anywhere. I've never heard whether or not the crank survives there or not.

There is massive performance gains to be had by welding your exhaust valves shut and putting forged connecting rods in the tailpipe.
but thats like, extreme drag racing stuff.

No crank upgrades necessary. Head work is also not necessary until around 350-400rwhp as it's much cheaper and easier to turn up the boost until that point.

Ah definitive answer thanks good man instead of dick answers. Also no where in the previous article to did it state max crank specs. Also it is a bit muddy when talking about pistons. It loops back to con rod. Are you suppose to assume the pistons. Just wanted clarification.


7. The connecting rods. 250 WTQ. Maybe a little less over time. This is the weak link in the Miata engine. Mazda used the same 1.6L rods when building the 1.8L engine, so there is no variance in the power-holding ability between 1.6/1.8. You have two options for improving the rods: (Thanks Jeff Cieleski!!)
-----A. Cheap aftermarket rods: Will ensure that you break EVERYTHING ELSE before ever having to replace a rod again. (Detonation not included)
-----B. Expensive aftermarket rods: Will put power down exactly the same as the cheap rods, but weigh less, mathematically improving power gains

9. Stock Pistons. 300hp. This is not a definitive number, but rather a generally agreed upon value. Stock pistons are forged, but generally fail at the ring lands. Your options for pistons include compression ratio and price.
-----A. Compression Ratio: High compression ratios tend to offer better throttle response, as well as more off-boost power. The drawback is that higher compression ratios require a much more precise tune. More power is being made on lower compression pistons because of their natural resistance to knock relative to the higher compression pistons. Current members are running radical ignition timing on low compression pistons…with a safety margin...

No miata will make 300hp. There is no proven formula to even get close. Like why bother going to trackspeed. The conversation will go like this

You: "Hey man i want decent power can i buy a turbo kit"
Trackspeed: "Easy here is my track proven turbo kit you should be fine with a 6258. What supporting mods will you be doing?"
you: "Huh"
Trackspeed: "Not to worry haha. We will set you up with injectors, rods, pistons, acl race bearings and a good intercooler and you will be all set for lots of track days at your power goal"
you: "WOW! you have this all figured out to a science dont you?"
Trackspeed: "Pretty common practice now and we did a lot of R&D to prove this setup. We believe it to be one of the best kits on the market. Go check out our website sometime for even more good parts."

300hp? Easy, get $6000 ready.
need:
turbo: efr6258, gt2860 or gt2871
injectors: flow force 640cc or id1000/1050x
ms3 ecu
good clutch, I recommend FM level1
upgraded fuel pump
intercooler/piping/Bob

engine:
Stronger rods Ebay or brand name, all seems to work fine.
while engine is open, new rings, oem seals, bearings and hone.
if starting with nb1 or nb2 block, get pistons out of NA miata. Stock lower compression, and cheap.

dont touch head, crank, etc... that's all just fine to over 400hp.

if 400+ hp is needed in future, get forged pistons.

this is exactly what I'm running. 309hp.
