Fracking clutch slippage... [Joe Perez swore in a thread title!]

Guess it's nature's way of telling you that you are making enough torque...

Mach929 01-10-2010 07:14 PM

what clutch are you running?

18psi 01-10-2010 07:25 PM

I got it after a whopping 2 days of having the car turbo'd.
Welcome to the club...

On another note, which one are you planning to go with next? The FM happy meal?

pdexta 01-10-2010 07:35 PM

Sounds like nature's way of telling you it's time for that built '99 motor to go in. ;) (or is that what's making the clutch slip?)

cardriverx 01-10-2010 07:37 PM

Its real funny, my clutch just started slipping too. I think its because of the cold weather and im pushing like 2 psi more than normal lol.

y8s 01-10-2010 09:03 PM

haha i put the twins on long before I had a turbo on the car.

-Banks- 01-10-2010 09:08 PM

im curious on the clutch you're using too. and power/torque numbers :)

Joe Perez 01-10-2010 09:13 PM

The current clutch is an ACT "HD" package, in the 1.6 size; ZM1-HDMM. I guess they really are serious about it being good for only 200 ft/lbs. It's got maybe 15,000 miles on it, and only just started slipping recently.

I've got the FM stage 2 clutch and a 1.8 flywheel sitting on the shelf. They were intended for Jessica (which is still in pieces) however they may be going into the '92 now...

Also, nice edit on the title. Ok, I broke the rules... :D

I have a buddy who has a 1.8 Spec Stage 3 and Fidanza f/w for sale. He wants only $250 for the set. WTS: Clutch and Flywheel - MX5 Miata Atlanta Owners Club

That should hold you just fine, and allow you to keep the new clutch aside so you can get the new motor assembly spin balanced with the clutch installed. ;)

y8s 01-10-2010 10:02 PM

Joe, is "jessica" named after the top gear theme?

Joe Perez 01-10-2010 10:12 PM

cardriverx offers an interesting point about the weather. It's been in the 30s and 40s the past few days here, and I am running about 15 PSI at the moment. I may wait until I get back out to San Diego and warmer temps (leaving in exactly one week) to see if the problem miraculously goes away.

As an aside, I'm constantly amazed that this engine has held together for as long as it has. I'd have thought for sure that my rods would have been pretzeled by now. I really need to get on a dyno and see just what she's putting out.

Hmmm.
Stage 3 Heavily modified street and race engines. Offers sufficient daily driveability with comfortable pedal feel and quick engagement. Offers good wear characteristics under low and high stress usage. High clamp pressure plate, 4 or 6 puck carbon semi-metallic friction with high sprung hub and disc assembly, bearing and tool kit. 6 puck is standard on most applications, but 4 puck can be specified when ordering.
"Sufficient" driveability and a six-puck metallic disc... Anybody have any first-hand experience with one of these?

(Plus, the thing's got 31,000 miles on it...)

Tempting, though. I might.

Of course.

my brother had a stage 3 clutch in his 240sx sr20 swap, with a fidanza resurfaced fw. the pedal feel was kinda heavy, definitely something to get used to. but you will not have clutch slipping problems whatsoever.

my friends civic had a stage 5 clutch, and thats nowhere near daily driveable. just to give you a range.

Every time I hear "Stage 'x' clutch" I seriously want to shake a baby.
'Stage' is not a measurement of anything, not if you exist in reality that is.

P.S. Ricers dont exist in reality.

-Banks- 01-10-2010 10:32 PM

thats what they call it from the factory. it was a spec stage 3 clutch.

its actually a very common marketing tool for clutches. exedy sells them by fx100 fx200 fx300 and so on (company may be wrong though, im not sure which does that) thats all it is really.

yah but a competition stage 3 != exedy stage 3 != spec stage 3

i guess i missed where you specified that it was a spec clutch, but more often than not people (ricers) will just say they have a 'stage x' without specifying brand or anything.

Joe Perez 01-10-2010 10:48 PM

I'm as ---- as the next guy about labeling things as "Stage X", but in this case, it genuinely is the official model designation of the clutch package in question: SPEC Clutches & Flywheels

y8s 01-10-2010 10:54 PM

"carbon graphite semi metallic" sounds tame, but the pictures dont look nearly black enough.

it looks more like a ceramic-metallic which is about as tame as a rabid tiger with a samurai sword tied to its tail with a dwarf carrying two sawed off shotguns on its back.

if I were buying a new clutch today, there is only one option.

I've driven his car. The clutch isn't obnoxious at all. Pedal is about as heavy as the ACT HD is, but it's as "grabby" as the XT.
He's running an intercooled MP62, no more than 200 whp, and he has a long highway commute to work. Just thought that it would be a really good, really cheap solution for you... :2cents:
Yeah, I'd probably prefer to have one of Emilo's twin disc set ups, but they happen to be $800 more expensive.
