HKS Carbon Ti Exhaust Muffler

Thoughts? Too rice?

http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._6735893_n.jpg

I'm expecting to get flamed, just picked this brand-new unit up off a Supra buddy for $100, it retails for ~$400. Yes, it's real, captures that mad-tyte JDM look. I didn't buy it with the intention of putting it on my Miata, but the thought is now crossing my mind -- especially because it'll fit. Lemme know, brahs.

Sean 03-07-2010 11:01 PM

If you put a 2JZ in your miata then its not rice at all its supposed to be there. Without a 2JZ or a serious motor to back it up I would say it could go either way. All depends on how you make it look when you put it in. I would do it. My vote is not rice.

dustinb 03-07-2010 11:20 PM

Is your miata even turbo'd? If it's a pretty stock car (engine), then yes, total rice.

pusha 03-07-2010 11:26 PM

It's got a 16g. I'm in the process of sorting everything so I've yet to update my signature.

yunvmyegt 03-07-2010 11:45 PM

not fond of the cf casing of the muffler, but that odd flamed tip always kinda turned me on...lol.....

turotufas 03-08-2010 12:06 AM

A 4 3/4 inch tip on a Miata... Save it for something else.

Bond 03-08-2010 12:26 AM

I wish mine was that big :jerkit:

pusha 03-08-2010 12:29 AM

Haha, I don't know. My EVO friend wants to buy it but then I still need a muffler. I figure I can tuck it as much as possible and just hope no one calls me out on it. I hope it doesn't sound too bad.

JayL 03-08-2010 09:59 AM

For some reason, I like it.

Sean 03-08-2010 10:21 AM

For a rice can it is most likely the best sounding one you will ever find. I would love to see it on your car but I am not sure how you will get it under there. If you do please post pics because I will most likely do the same in the not so far future.

johnmatt 03-08-2010 10:30 AM

Less rice muffler moar Z06

pusha 03-08-2010 10:42 AM

Ehh, I think I'll just have it put on to hear how it sounds. If it's that bad, I'll cut it off and sell it for what I paid.

The C5Z. I love the C6Z but those are already fast I like it when you have to work to make something fast. That's why I got a miata haha

Vashthestampede 03-08-2010 04:32 PM

List it on ebay starting at $99 and whatever you get for it, spend on the miata wisely. Putting that on the miata just cause is stupid. :2cents:

turotufas 03-08-2010 04:54 PM

I think hose mufflers are going out of style soon anyways. Thank god.

A 3 inch mandrel bent straight pipe with a straight thru muffler is me. That will become popular. Damn.

Turbo_4 03-08-2010 07:20 PM

I've got a knockoff on mine and it sounds fine. I have mine where just the tip sticks out, you really have to tuck the muffler body in there to get it to look right.

+1
sell it at a profit and buy a muffler you know you will like.

It's got some mods and is "way" faster than the C6Z. ;)

As far as the HKS muffler goes, I'm going to install it and see how it sounds. If it's shitty, I've already got an EVO buddy who wants to buy it.

Jeff_Ciesielski 03-09-2010 01:04 AM

Quality 3" canister mufflers sound fucking awesome on a turbo miata. Do it.

johnmatt 03-15-2010 06:10 PM

Still in for pics and mod list of C5Z

2002 Chevrolet Corvette Z06:
  • Thunder Racing 230/224 .575/.563 111 camshaft
  • Spec Stage II+ clutch or some shit and a lwfw (don't notice a difference and it's a PITA)
  • Ported intake manifold
  • 85mm throttle body
  • Vararam intake
  • TPIS Long tubes
  • X-pipe
  • Soon-to-be-removed high-flow cats
  • Stock exhaust (I've retained it for weight savings, it's Ti and lighter than most aftermarket options + it's loud as fuck as is)
  • MGW Shifter (it's shitty, I hate it)
  • Radar detector, jammers, etc. Waiting on the smoke screen and machine gun turrets (j/k)
  • Lame C6Z reproduction wheels, to be shitcanned as soon as I can line up four OEM C5Z rears.

I'm probably forgetting a few things, it made 420 rwhp on a Mustang dyno with its current, conservative tune. It's a pain in the ass to drive compared to the C6Z, but it actually hooks sometimes -- which is nice.

johnmatt 03-16-2010 09:52 AM

Very nice. So are you from Miata or Gainesville? I'm in the Jacksonville area and am going to be down at gainesville raceway next week with some local 240 guys. Who tuned your car? My last car was a cammed 04 GTO and god do I miss that car but after the fire I told myself I was done with car payments for a while

TimR 03-16-2010 10:03 AM

As far as I'm concerned that muffler will look obnoxious. Regardless put it on post pics and vids! lol

I'm from Miami, going to school in Gainesville. I might be at the next GRRC event.

I'm all about the LSx series motors especially when they're in the Z's... but how is a 420rwhp C5Z 'way faster' than a stock C6Z? I can see your C5Z probably keeping up pretty well with a C6Z but anything more sounds like a stretch..

420rwhp/3115lbs vs ~420-460rwhp/3180lbs.

I did some googling and find C6Z's stock dyno anywhere from 420rwhp to 460rwhp bone stock.

Don't mean to crap on your thread and I suspect as I type this that might've been sarcasm. Either way, Nice car(s.) There were two of them in that garage?

I was being facetious.

And yes, two of them reside in the garage.

I wouldn't go that far, mine sounds decent and on cars like supras, evo's, wrxs...they really sound pretty good. It's really the na cars that ruin them.

AldizziSRT 03-17-2010 07:56 PM

Pusha, do you still have the HKS cf muffler?

AldizziSRT 03-17-2010 07:58 PM

If you do, I'll purchase it from you. $150?

chicksdigmiatas 03-20-2010 12:07 AM

Actually he will send you a cashiers check for 1000, you put it in your bank, and he will even let you keep an extra 50 for your troubles, only send back 800. :)

pusha 03-20-2010 12:21 AM

I'm going to put it on my car and see how it sounds.

if you want to really save weight.... make your exhaust out of aluminum...

WonTon 04-05-2010 05:50 PM

i have plans to putting an HKS on mine, or just do a strait 3" exhaust!

is it a 3" inlet? hurry up and put it on so i can hear what is sounds like!

Faeflora 04-05-2010 06:51 PM

Fuck, rip off the quad exit exhaust on your c6z and weld that fucker on. I don't know what the debate is.

JBalla1036 04-05-2010 07:42 PM

I like the hks a lot. I think that it will just look too big on a miata but thats just me. I would say just go str8 pipe with a inline muffler

pusha 04-05-2010 08:16 PM

I was thinking Inconel, should be cost-effective.

pusha 04-05-2010 08:31 PM

I need to come up to Atlanta at some point and check out some of the Miatas up there. Seems like there's quite a bit of you guys.

WonTon 04-05-2010 08:33 PM

yeh there are a few nice rides up here!

here soon after my car is up and running im gonna try and get some of the ATL guys together to cruise down to FLA for a weekend!

johnmatt 04-05-2010 10:21 PM

I'm down for a FL GA weekend!!!!

WonTon 04-05-2010 10:29 PM

i was thinking something along the lines of driving down friday morning, chilling out around some of the good local places that you FLA guys know about! saturday hitting up the beach. after the beach do some more driving on roads yall locals know and like and make people  over our cars. then hit up a bar or two. and sunday, chill a lil more at the beach and then head home!

hopefully some good shenanigans will occur!

johnmatt 04-05-2010 10:53 PM

Well if it's this weekend I'm out. I live 30min north of jax and the car still isn't running. Lots of good back roads out here to fly through though

WonTon 04-05-2010 10:55 PM

it will be sometime mid july! my car is in pieces and is waiting on parts!

That's good. But I think it would be better if you put the LS7 in the Miata, the BP in the C5 and the LS6 in the C6Z.

its gonna be about a month or so before i even get my engine! the guy who is building it is doing it on the side for me (im trading him my 96 shell for teh engine) :D it wont have forged internals though, butt it will be a race preped engine. thats a WIN in my book.

MrMightyMouse 05-23-2010 07:59 PM

DON'T DO IT!

Let some kid with civic buy it from you for too much money and do something cool with the cash.

I just saw a guy in an S2000 with dual coffee cans, stuffed under his car... I felt sorry for him. Someone was obviously lying to him when he bought them.

Great addition to a thread that stopped a month ago:noob:

Haha. Coffee cans. I like it.

MrMightyMouse 05-23-2010 09:55 PM

Sorry, I didn't realize I could't contribute to the discussion after a certain period of time. Next time I would prefer the response, "that was so last month". ;)

I've been MrMightyMouse since 2003 on other forums and recently joined this forum because there looked to be some good content. I apologize for upsetting your feelings regarding name similarities.

It's still my opinion that coffee can mufflers make any Miata look ridiculous, regardless of how good they sound or how old the thread is. ;)

18psi 05-23-2010 10:01 PM

Don't get your panties in a bunch, I'm just giving you a hard time.

And yes, coffee cans do look dumb on miatas.

I want to know..... what you do for a living haha.
