How to mate TR3160 with LFX
Hey all,
I recently LFX swapped my RX8. Normally you'd use the matching AY6 transmission, but after reading negative things about it, I opted to mate a Tremec TR3160 from a Gen 6 V6 (LGX) Camaro. I just want to put these notes out into the internet to hopefully be useful to someone. This forum has great tech and some existing LFX builds. Fun facts

I worked with CM to develop this custom flywheel. It's an LFX flywheel that has an added pilot bearing feature. I actually chose an E36 pilot bearing as homage to my old cars. hah. I also had the stack reduced a bit because after measuring the travel on three different TR3160 slave cylinder setups, the LFX parts are pushing the limits. This flywheel centers the pressure plate travel within the slave cylinder travel and seems to work well. Once I clean up the Google sheet with this info and pictures I'll share it. Also, a couple folks helped me with figuring this out. I'll shout em out if they agree to it! Not sure if they're on here. |
Thanks for sharing, some seriously detailed documentation here that I'm sure will help someone some day.
But, I gotta ask about your lfx rx8, you have a build thread or pics of it? |
I don't really have a thread, but I have some pics in an iCloud album I can perhaps share. I'll check that out in a bit.
Here's a link to a google doc with a bit more info and pics: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing I used the Keisler Automation swap kit and Andrew helped me out by making some of the parts to my specs. He agreed that he'd sell these custom parts (drive shaft, shifter rod, crossmember with 10L60 mount) if anyone needs them. |
First of all, thanks for posting all the info. Its giving me courage to install a TR3160 in my 2010 CTS.
I have 2 questions. First question is about the wiring of the VSS. Are you running that in parallel with the clutch pedal switch or do you not have a clutch pedal switch installed? Second, what is the RPS? Is that the reverse light switch? |

When you say pushing the limits, do you think one could get away without the stack modification or is it essential?

VSS question
For some reference, I have a 2013 v6 Camaro with the LFX and AY6 setup and I picked up a tr3160 with this exact swap in mind. When you go on to explain how the VSS requires 5v instead of 12v, I also noticed that there's an additional wire going to the vss on the lfx harness that outs out 10v. I assume this is the signal wire. Should I leave this alone or does that also have to be changed? I noticed there is a 3v wire on the clutch sensor and wondered if that corresponded as well, or if the only thing that needed done was the 12v to 5v.
I can email my phone number to ya if you have time to talk, thanks in advance :) - Johnathankoz@gmail.com |
