How to pull the block

if the head is already off?

(The car is on the side of the road, and, I don't wanna tow the smurf to the garage before the engine is ready to be dropped in).

I don't have a crane, although I can always "rent" one @ Advanced Auto.
Suggestions?

(I will have help, though).

Unbolt the trans and get a couple of buddies to lift. I can lift the block myself with alot of strain. I am sure if you get a couple dudes that are half way big, they can do it.

alik 03-08-2010 10:46 PM

I am planning to drop oil and water, and, since the intake and exhaust manifolds are already off to the side, it'll be somewhat simple to pull it.
I'm just concerned about the engine being fairly low in the bay, and having to yank it upwards... (and, possibly, scuffing the bodywork)

18psi 03-08-2010 11:06 PM

If you don't wanna fuck shit up you need a crane/cherry picker. if you're willing to take the RISK of scratching but do it cheap then do what was previously said. I'd get a good long chain, and a big ass rail/metal pole/strong object, chain that bitch up, and just have two people on each side yank the sucker out.

That's just me tho

You are removing the engine while the car is stuck on the side of the road? And it doesn't have a head?

Wow.

alik 03-08-2010 11:35 PM

Not stuck. Just sitting. Parked.
I burned the valve, and, head has already been reworked.

Impressed now?

18.
How would you chain it up? 'Round the oil pan? Forgive the stupidity, as I've only yanked the engine once before, and, never without the head.

using the head bolts. one on the rear left and one on the front right. it would balance the engine out while you pull it. you want to bolt the chain down, not wrap it around. Wrapping around is the stupidest shit you can do

Hey, you don't even know me! I've probably done stupider shit! :D

Thanks. Appreciate the advice. 1 head bolt in each location of the "hoist ears" (or whatever those little fuckers are called that attach to the head). Got it.
Chain, 2 head bolts, crane, 2 assholes to guide the dead weight.

Thanks! :bigtu:

I can carry an assembled shortblock by myself. I cannot lift it off the ground, but I can carry it. Two guys should have no problem. I would use four head bolts, two poles, and lift it out with one pole on each shoulder of the two guys. Two guys lift it out, one guy rolls the car back 6ft.

So can I, but lifting it is a horrible pain. I'm thinking crane thingy is a safer way of not making the bodywork any worse (some guy backed into the car as it was sitting under the cover) :)

magnamx-5 03-09-2010 12:02 AM

wtf kind of wusses do we have here the short block isnt that bad maybe 250 lbs just man up and grab that shit out of there maybe have someone watch to make sure you clear the motor mounts etc when you step out of the car. Or you can pick it up and toss it over to your buddy.

18psi 03-09-2010 12:08 AM

Make sure to lift with your back, not your legs:giggle:

magnamx-5 03-09-2010 12:16 AM

hell your arms should do the trick just fine. damn california posers

Hey, I totally would, but, I'm afraid of ripping my sparkling pink jump suit :riaa:

hustler 03-09-2010 08:52 AM

I just reach in with my left arm, because I'm typically holding a bottle of vintage Veuve in the other, and lift it out.

thagr81 us 03-09-2010 09:07 AM

Me and one other person can lift a completely assembled short block from the ground into the back of a truck/SUV. You should have no problem with a helper... Just make sure you eat your Wheaties that morning and you will be good to go.

pusha 03-09-2010 09:51 AM

Get money, fuck bitches.

gospeed81 03-09-2010 10:01 AM

Seriously...I've picked up an assembled short block myself at least four times in the last month.

Unbolt, pull out.

Being that far in car and worried about scratches I would use the two people/pipe and chain method.

Once out it's easy to move around.

flier129 03-09-2010 11:28 AM

I put in a short block without a head once. I did what 18psi said, two head studs one on the back left and one on the front right and put the studs thru a chain hole. The chain was small enough that the stock head stud washer didn't go thru.

When my 30 yr old engine lift failed on me a few days ago I got to squat the weight of the engine. The arm of it was on my shoulder, fun stuff.

Like everyone said a short-block is easily moved around by an average built guy. I've moved the extra two I have many times, but getting one out of a engine bay would be a PITA.

Get a lift, a chain, two head studs, fuck bitches, crank the lift, roll the car back, done, get money.

johnmatt 03-09-2010 11:55 AM

I'm with Savington and Gospeed. Just pick that bitch up with 2 poles. I'm 160pounds and I've carried my shortblock several and it's no big deal. Or you can do it like the F-Body guys and unbolt the whole front subframe and roll that shit out from under the car. Either way you have aids
