Just one more question - how do you do the ignition wiring on the 1.6 ignitor to the VVT cops...? Is there a how to anywhere?

Bump!
Sav, I have a few questions for you. I just got an 01 engine yesterday, and it came with the entire engine harness. My thoughts would be to use this harness and tie it into the current wiring harness I have (93 chassis) and run the extra wires I need (2 injector wires, vvt, anything else?) I was wondering though, You mentioned in the second post in this thread that you can keep the coolant temp stuff the same. Does that mean that I can use the 01 coolant temp sensor for both the ecu, as well as the gauge? Or do I need to retrofit the 2 wire temp sensor and single wire gauge sending unit? |
I think you should also stick to Sav's severe suggestion to keep the old wiring - everything else will be a wiring job from hell (believe me I looked into it)

Do it exactly as he says, thank him later. |

You keep your '93 CLT sensors on the back of the head and ditch the fan thermocouple at the front (use your standalone to control the fans like a capitalist would). You may be able to use the '01 CLT and splice the wires correctly, but it may also require recalibrating the ECU and the dash gauge may not work, so it's not worth the hassle if you have known good/working CLT sensors from your current engine. |

[*]Coil wiring. If you have a 94-97 NA, this is pretty easy - just hook up the wires as you otherwise would, and then use your ECU to drive the tachometer. If you have a 90-93 NA, it's slightly more complicated, as you'll need to bypass the OEM ignitor before you hook up to the OEM wires. This assumes you're using the 2001+ coils - if you're doing LS coils or keeping your factory NA coils, then you don't have to touch the wiring here.[/list]
Do i just wire up the vvt ignition coils straight from this 3 pin connector? Thanks! |
The igniter is on the passenger fender. Look in the COP thread for a picture with pinouts.

We just cut the wires into the igniter and ran new wires to the coils, then ran the tach wire back to the ECU through the fender wall. |

It's not worth swapping the whole ECU. If you're going through the trouble of swapping a VVT motor, control it with a standalone so you get the most out of it.
This is an old tread, but I still hope to get som answers. Because of the strict regulations in Norway, I must present my '97 1,8 for inspection with the stock ECU from my '02 donor car after installing the vvt-engine. I can not install a standalone until the engine swap is approved. Will it still be possible to use Savingtons approach when using the stock '02 ECU, or do I have to use the unfortunate method of splicingin the '02 engine wiring harness? The job in the engine compartment would be very easy, but I assume the job under the dashboard is going to be agonizing and difficult. Good advices would be appreciated |
I think it would be easier to buy a patch harness to let you plug an '01 ECU into your '97 harness.

Do You know if it is possible to get a ready made harness for this, or will I have to alter the wire layout in the patch harness myself? |
Contact Rustin at Boomslang Fabrication.

Would a stock 01 ECU allow the car to run without an immobilizer?
