just bought a 99 miata 1.8 and need help please
I bought this car to fix and it has a hole in the block. My question is can I put a 01 engine in my 99 or atleast the block and bolt my head to it? Apparently it's hard to find a 99 or 00 engine for cheap. Also will the jdm engines off eBay work the same as long as it's from a 99 or 00? Basically what are my options for around $1000 to get this car fixed?

Welcome to the forum.
Yes the 01 block will physically bolt up but will have higher compression.

Exactly what I did.
Got a 1997 miata engine for $300.
Swapped the Intake cam gear off the 99 engine and valve cover (so it can read the cam signal) blocked off the cas on the cylinder head, swapped the front main seal(well i didnt but i should've but i just filed it flat, but would replaced it with a 99+ if i were to do it again)
used the 97 fuel rail and made a quick connect line from the frame to the old school slip style 97 fuel rail. (its a retunless fuel system on the 99+ so I just left the return part of the rail chilling.
Used all the sensors from the 99 engine.
Car ran excellent, was maybe down on power but that car got me many ftd's at local autox. I would do it that way again in a hearbeat. the 99-05 engine price tax is out of control. Pm me if you have any other questions. I think I made a thread a while back.
