Lifters or something worse?

Ive been noticing this noise at idol and mid rps. I am on a trip with the car now around 300miles away from home but thats becides the point. The noise seems to be more prevelent now thwn before. I can not tell any difference when driving performance wise and the sound really seems to be comming from the front of the head. I am hopeing this is some kind of lifter noise but it sounds quite like knocking but does not seem to be comming from the bottom end. Any ideas? People have similar noises? The link for the video is bellow

mmmjesse 03-04-2017 12:24 PM

i hate to say it, but that does not sound like a lifter. Atleast from the video it doesnt. Lifters can sound rough and knockish but thats not this.

joshbot007 03-04-2017 12:57 PM

Any ideas or things i can try to diagnose? Sound like something in the head or a bent rod or something? I have basic tools along with me to test such as pulling out plugs or taking off valve cover

Use [yt] [ /yt] (with no space) to embed youtube links.

Sounds rod knockish to me. It'll knock at certain rpms, so instead of revving it up and down, hold it at certain rpms to really listen to the noise. That aint HLAs though. Drain your oil into a clean container, check for shiny pieces with a flashlight. Finally cut your filter open (carefully, don't get housing debris in it), and again look for debris.

Keep in mind, if you did loose a rod bearing and find debris in your oil and/or filter, your factory oil cooler and turbo are both now trash. Turbo can be rebuilt, but the oil cooler is garbage. Obviously check the cams for scoring since there is no damage, but any and all oil passages in the head need to be thoroughly cleaned.

It definitely knocks at lower rpm but seems to dissapear over 3.5k. I really have no choice but to try and make the trip home next week no matter what i find. The closer i make it home the lower the towing price will be so im just gonna roll with it. I still plan on trying to diagnose tomorrow or monday but at this point no matter what i find i really have no choice but to try to take it home. The noise has been prevelent for about 2 weeks but became more outstanding and finally concering (leading me to belive it was more then hlas) about halfway throught the trip out. Plan to run as easy as possible out of boost on the way home. She makes it she makes it. She dies, well... she dies

Yeah, I have no idea what that might be. Have you tried pulling the accessory belts and seeing if it goes away? If you are lucky, it is a bearing in one of the accessories. That really doesn't sound like rod knock to me. At least not from the times I have heard it. It is too dull for it.

joshbot007 03-04-2017 09:50 PM

Im not willing to write my mtor off as shot yet because it really sounds like its comming from the front of the head, almost from the timing belt area. The video makes it sound more like a rod knock then it sounds in person (really does not sound anything from the traditional rod knock but then again it may be) but im honestly willing to accept the worst because if it is the worst it is and there is nothing i can do. Like I said i plan on diagnosing tomorrow or monday and if I see it nessary or my other tests dont find anything I am more then willing to pull accesory belts for a try. In fact today when i was listening i almost thought for a second that the noise was coming from the harmonic damponer region or a pully but wrote that off but it is definetly something that i will look for if other tests prove negative before pulling the motor

Waterpump bearings taking a dump?

joshbot007 03-04-2017 11:09 PM

That is certaintly a possibility. It is new but a unit off a amazon timing belt kit (gnb brand or something I cant remember). That is another area where i thoght the noise may have been originating from today but wrote it off because its new. i may pull off the belts second after pulling one plug at a time to see if anything changes from that.

Check the big bolt holding the harmonic damper on the crank, make sure it's not loose. Could be the keyway is slapping around making noises at low speed.

If there is metal in the oil and you insist on driving it 300 miles, I would drain it and put some 50W oil in there to keep the oil pressure up. If it's a rod bearing or something failing, the failing bearing will have excessive clearance and low pressure, which makes it wear itself out even faster. More oil pressure will slow that process.

How long ago did you do the work?

MartinezA92 03-05-2017 07:45 PM

Had a similar noise and I figured it was lifters. About 5 miles later spark plug #1 shot out of the head. PO must have left them loose.

Just a thought, maybe worth checking.

joshbot007 03-05-2017 08:13 PM

Well its not the water pump i pulled the belt. I will try plugs as i have extra along. I believe it is a rod knock or spun bearing that may have rotated or gotton worse on the way out (but most likely comming from the bottom end. The oil pressure on the gauge ( i put in a real one from an eariler car) seems normal but im guesssing one bad passage wouldn't change the gauge reading by anything. The oil on the dipstick has no shiny parts whatsoever but i realize that is not the best indication. Looks like im draining the oil tomorrow if i can find something to get it up (my relitives do not have proper equipment for really anything so im left with the tools i brought along)

joshbot007 03-05-2017 08:15 PM

1k and thats how long its been tcharged as well

curly 03-05-2017 08:43 PM

I've checked engines that ended up completely trashed but looked great on the dip stick. Metal flakes fall to the bottom, the dipstick only measures the top quart.

Out of curiosity do bent rods make noise? I mean like knock in way? I just find it some what odd that the noise has been prevelent for a while but is only slowly getting worse and only seemed to get worse after hard running on the trip out. I feel like rod knock would come on and finished my motor alot quicker then how long it has been making this noise. I did plenty of pulls on the way here and ran it moderetly hard buiding boost in 5th for fast cruising at 4k+ for most of the trip. I took it to the car wash today (got into an unexpeced snow storm on the way out and it saw road salts for the first time since i bought the car) and it made noise alot more when colder but when going down the road it sounds normal and is unable to be heard when cruising. And due to that i dident realize the noise got that much worst till i pulled in when i got here and heard the noise before shutting it down

joshbot007 03-08-2017 05:35 PM

Ive never been so happy and pissed at the same time. This is the source of the noise. 3 of the 4 harmonic dampener bolts sheared. This is the second time and this time with 4 10.9 grade bolts in under 300 miles all torqued and loctighted to spec. All of the accessories spin freely. There was so much resistance it chewed another bolt diameter over. I am working at getting the sheared parts out again and should be safe to get home but why? This is not installer error, there is obviously something else going on here.https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...d0a3be363b.jpg

albumleaf 03-08-2017 05:51 PM

I don't think that's from resistance.. that's from it getting loose and slamming back and forth.

Buy a new gear boss, front/rear backing plates and new hardware. What do you think the torque spec is? Also, does the pulley wobble when it's installed?

ryansmoneypit 03-08-2017 06:56 PM

Yeah, that didn't happen in a minute or two. That took a while.

mmmjesse 03-08-2017 08:16 PM

for it to move back and forth like that, it would have to sheer off the locating pin. has it ever had the locating pin?
