Manual Boost Control Install question.

Ok, I'm not completely clueless, I know one port on the MBC will connect to the port on the turbo housing, and one to a port on the wastegate, but I have two primary questions.

1. My wastegate has two ports, I know I can use the top port on the wastegate actuator for the boost control, but I'm not sure if from that point I just tee into the the side of the line that connects to the turbo housing.

2. And most confusing, has anyone ever used the MBC, if so what is the point of this tee vs a plastic one. What are the black brackets, and screws for. The brackets to m don't mount to the MBC, so I don't see a point. In fact it only has one thing that looks like a port for a screw, and It looks like a set screw has been installed.

And finally would it be better to just go with the EBC setup for the MSPNP rather than using this? Or implement both for a dual boost setting for when the wife take the are out. Which shouldn't happen very often.

use the lower nipple of the wastegate actuator. leave the top open. the gray diamond is air being venting, it's not connected to anything.

I would have thought the boost source on the turbo housing would feed to the first port on the mbc, then the second port on the MBC would allow boost to go to the waste gate actuator when the correct pressure is reached. Thats part of the reason why the supplied "t" didn't make a lot of sense to me. The second port on the MBC, and the top port on the wastegate actuator staying vented are both surprises to me.

there might be a different installation for a dual port wastegate, but the above method should work.

Very cool, thanks for the help

I hit 14psi last night while running 1.8 injectors. This scared the shit out of me. If I would not have gotten off the gas I bet it would have gone higher. I turned the knob on the boost control the other way until it stopped and did the same thing. Should I be using the top port on the dual port waste gate?

Braineack 10-18-2009 06:25 PM

oh yeah, whoops top port!

apariah 10-18-2009 09:30 PM

So use the top port on the actuator, and leave the bottom port open. on the wastegate, and the top port on the mbc open.

I used a MBC like that once as a temp...it sucked ass and boost was all over the place.

You've got a MS.

Wish I would of done this first instead of FM's MBC.

Braineack 10-19-2009 11:46 AM

MSI + EBC = Fail

I'm using the EBC to close fully from 0-3000RPM, then open fully to let the MBC control the boost.

therieldeal 10-19-2009 12:31 PM

no luck with the MS boost control??

my boost is all over the place with my MBC, i was hoping that the MS EBC would allow me to fix it :/.

the open loop code kinda stinks. I mean I could get a perfect flat boost with it, the issue was, it would vary depending on temps. I could have 15psi one morning but only 11psi in the afternoon here.

my MBC holds perfectly flat to redline, I have two configurations for the EBC, use it to help spool or I can run it in parallel and fail to wastegate pressure for a high/low boost setting.

the new closed loop code for MS-II looks promising, im thinking about upgrading this winter to MS-II to try out the closed loop stuff.

flier129 10-19-2009 12:48 PM

Guess I'll keep my MBC on and not get the EBC, didn't know it had issues. Didn't really read into it either lol.

Braineack 10-19-2009 12:50 PM

if I lived in FL or something it'd be fine. I needed it cause I was having boost creep and I was able to tune it out using the EBC. But moving the boost source to the post IC and then lengthening the wastegate arm a few turns got rid of the creep, just a small 1psi increase throughout the revs, I was fine with that. So I went back to the MBC so I had constant boost levels regardless of ambient temps.

The 460's came in the mail today. I have a 14psi actuator that originally came on the turbo. Should I just put it back on, and not worry with the MBC, or getting an EBC. I wanted to set a high and low boost mode, but if this is going to be a big issue, I could just run 14psi and leave it that way for a while. This is a stock 1.6 block the way, with a t28.

FYI I now have 2.5" exhaust from the turbo back, with a Borla Cat, and a straight through muffler. I use to see boost at 4000 or so rpm, I'm now starting to spool around 3000.

Braineack 10-19-2009 07:57 PM

you still always want an MBC even set to the lowest boost level.

apariah 10-20-2009 04:04 AM

Ok, I'll reinstall the original actuator, and give the MBC another try. I was only able to get 9.2 psi out of the two port actuator with the MBC. The 14psi actuator is a single port design. I'll give it a try at lunch or after work depending on time. But I will say 9psi feels very different with exhaust than 8psi felt with nothing after the dp.

apariah 10-21-2009 08:01 AM

Well, I think I'm now well over 200 hp. I hit 15psi last night, with the original actuator, and the mbc. 15 psi is a completely different experience than I expected. Any idea who long my OEM drivetrain can survive this?
