Mazdaspeed Comp Eng Mounts -- Initial Impressions

2 Attachment(s)
I just threw on the Mazdaspeed competition motor mounts. I bought them from Flyin' Miata a couple weeks ago. The install was a huuuge bitch as I decided not to remove ANY components besides the motor mounts. ~2 hrs from jacking the car up, turning my arms into pretzels, and letting it back down. My old mounts were not torn up. In fact, they look to be in fairly good condition.

IDLE: Definitely noticed more vibration coming from the motor. It almost shook the car like a slight misfire, although at double the speed of normal misfire. In my personal opinion, it's something I can get used to, and actually forgot about it during most of the first drive.

DRIVING: Noticed almost zero surging/bucking in first gear upon throttle tip-in, tip-out. The driveline felt very direct and smooth. Under boost with old mounts, throttle tip out would result in engine RPM's resonating. Comp mounts have no such thing. Shifting also felt a lot smoother/easier to get into the gate. Shift knob itself seemed to move less under power.

SHREDDING TIRES: This was the most notable change. OK, FYI... so I have bald Azenis in 30F weather. They don't grip well. With the old mounts, the car would wheel hop like crazy in 1st and all through 2nd. Even from a roll. Rear end would just bounce around. Terrible. With comp mounts the tires just spin smooth and controlled. The back end would swag a bit, but very progressive and controllable. I was impressed.

OK, I'm an idiot... they should work now.

fuck, I'm ordering them. I've already toasted one diff to wheelhop, don't need to do another.

funny thing.. i have mazdacomp mounts and i get all of those problems.....

Savington Feb 3, 2009 12:09 AM

You have poly diff mounts?

Doppelgänger Feb 3, 2009 06:51 AM

I think the diff. mounts are still stock.

I've noticed the most improvement with poly diff bushings....haven't installed the MS motormounts just yet. I don't get any wheel hop with the diff bushings installed.

I like mine as well. Can't wait to install the diff mounts I got from Sav.

Mazda mounts and poly rear mounts and still wheel hopping!

One Torsen blown up already, I love wheelhop!

Stop driving like a tool.

I'm thinking of putting these in instead of my MMR mounts. Has anyone driven back to back? The MMR mounts are shaking my filings out.

Saml01 Feb 3, 2009 01:51 PM

I have none of these problems you people mention and im on the stock mounts.

Needs moar power

Mazda comp motor mounts plus solid diff mounts = win. I enjoy.

I cannot stand solid motor mounts. If I had a race car I'd have them, however. The feel is great, the vibrations are not.

Are the MMRs totally undoable, or can they be driven on the street a little? My car isn't exactly the kind of car you go on dates in anymore, so if there is a feel difference that you really notice I want the MMRs, provided I'm not going to chip a tooth.

my car has solid motor mounts of some sort. I personally don't care for them and will be replacing them with comp mounts which I have.

I don't think you'll have a problem with them though Sav. They're not awful. They're just a little more rough than you'd expect from a street car.

Solid rear mounts and flexable front mounts just seem like a bad idea. That is a lot of torsional stress to put on the PPF, diff, and transmission case.
