So glad I ran across this. Subed
Does this have any hope of connecting to the Miata gauges?

Apparently 2000-2005 gauges can work using a $100 box that converts the signals.

aidandj 07-30-2015 12:13 PM

99-05 use electronic gauges, not manual speedo like NA. So its a matter of just adjusting signals.

So I think I might be the one that's making the gauge solution. The Dakota Digital box doesn't work perfectly with the NB dash - it's a mostly analog solution, turning the analog output of the sensor to another analog sensor for the dash. This works well for most gauge clusters, but as I understand it, there are differences between 3 types of NB dashes and each one is slightly "off" with the dakota boxes. While I was at the Mitty I talked to both FM and V8Roadsters, trying to get a handle on what exactly the problem(s) were.

Either way - there's a problem, and I'm making a solution. I already have some experience writing CAN to megasquirt (see https://www.miataturbo.net/megasquir...s-gauge-76481/ ) and it's just a little bit more hackery to get canbus from a non-MS ECU. I've already gotten control of the gauge cluster - and it's more accurate than the stock ECU. The oil pressure switch and coolant sensor are better served by running a wire to the stock sensors, or replacing the NB's oil pressure gauge with the real NA OPG. I can read the standard OBDII pid's for 2008 and up ECU's for km/h and RPM's. I'll be finishing up this board and the code once I get my dad's LFX on the road (best way to test it, eh?)

As an aside - I was thinking of just replacing the NA's cluster with a GM stepper motor setup, but then the odometer function wouldn't work. It seems trivial (though slightly annoying) to swap it out for an NB cluster.

Cool build Ryan, well it be at laguna ? I saw V8R V6 last year, very clean build.

I'll definitely be at MRLS, and IF the car is done in time then it will be there too. V8R was in the garage next to us last year and that is what got us talking and eventually lead to this in fact!

I hope that your car will be there!

This will be my first time running MRLS and I couldn't be more pumped!

portabull 08-13-2015 01:12 PM

making any headway?

ThePass 08-13-2015 03:58 PM

I've been so busy with ND development that I've decided that I don't want to rush the LFX swap just to have it (hopefully) running in time for MRLS in October. Prototype clutch is still in the works and a few weeks away, driveshaft and axles are still a few weeks out.. and I wouldn't take a car to Laguna Seca that I haven't had time to shake down and work out the kinks.

I'll be starting the project this month, but extending the deadline frees me up to keep some focus on the many ND projects we have going on, and I'll be able to do things right on this LFX project as I go.

makes perfect sense. there's some confusion as to whether our axles are too long, happened to carnut and i think us too. we'll get it worked out eventually.
this is not a project to get in a rush about, but it'll be worth the wait. we're wiring now....

Updated the budget list to reflect a change in expected cost on the ECU with base tune from V8R, as their tuner's license costs went up.

LFX Fuel Kit arrived, sans fuel pump as I already have a Walbro 255 from the turbo setup that will do the job. Kit uses a Corvette fuel filter, SS lines and AN fittings:

Clutch and flywheel are still in the works with some delays, but nothing unexpected as it's all prototype stuff.

Because the car won't be running at Laguna Seca, I'm picking up some of the remaining large items from V8R when we see them at that event (driveshaft and axles).

Wow, just getting back into Miatas and a lot has changed.....awesome build, who's ready to do the twin turbo GM swap?!?

Twin turbo swap will be crazy, especially when considering that the default transmission is an eight speed automatic with push-buttons on the steering wheel. It can do full-throttle shifts in .3 seconds.

Sounds like a fast car.....maybe just mate a t56 for rowing capabilities:)

Arca_ex 09-11-2015 02:27 PM

Wonder if a Ford V6 Ecoboost would fit. Now that would be nuts.

The default manual transmission for this engine is an Aisin MV5 or MV7 six speed. With the MV7 and 3.23 rear end, theoretical gear-limited top speed is over 200mph. Emphasis on "theoretical". :)

aidandj 09-13-2015 02:17 AM

<p>In for 200mph miata.</p>

Any updates? Using this as motivation to start collecting parts.

More parts in from V8R :)

"Stage 2" 32 spline axles rated for 550 lbs-ft with billet hubs and ARP studs:

MV7 to Getrag Driveshaft:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1446670369

The list of parts I'm waiting on is diminishing!

Still waiting on:
- Clutch/flywheel
- Radiator
- ECU with V8R's tune - after speaking with Shandelle about options I'm going to run their tune rather than tune it ourselves here so that we can build experience on their off-the-shelf offering.
