Should I: Gut my 00' intake?

Alright guys simple question here. I have read a lot on gutting the 99/00' intakes and never got a straight answer (unless I missed it somewhere), but should I attempt to gut and port/polish my intake and throttle body? I want to remove all the emissions crap from my car and want to gain some top end with this new build.

I have a spare intake and TB from when I bought the spare 99 for my 93 car. Well after selling out and buying a 2000 SE I now have a spare intake and TB to play with.

Can someone lead me in the right direction if I am missing a post that sums everything up. I want to completely gut both the top and bottom, and weld the rest of the crap to make an open intake.

Some of the threads i'v read and have gotten no answers:

https://www.miataturbo.net/general-m...testing-66901/
https://www.miataturbo.net/engine-pe...anifold-38809/

I have never seen this topic summed up so it would be nice to finally get answers on this. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

I would do it after seeing the Gutted IM Testing thread you posted. I think most people will suggest the Honda intake.

If you can source a honda mani and splice the two together for not too much money (welding is usually about 200-300, and a used blox is about 100) I'd go that route.
If you want to stay low budget and try the gutting go for it since you have a spare.

The reason you've seen inconclusive results is because that's what they are. We have a handful of people that posted their testing, but many of them either had too many variables, or were unable to consistently repeat the gains on the dyno, or actually recorded a loss in midrange with negligent gains up top. Its still a hit and miss IMHO.

Why don't you try the dual runner setup that some were going to try, but no one has yet (that we know of)

Yeah, I think there was a noob, Pinky or something, that was going to try it.

https://www.miataturbo.net/engine-pe...bo-cars-70799/

I want to see how that works vs gutting the entire thing.

Braineack 03-19-2013 11:27 AM

You should just utilize the VICs until someone actually dynos the dual chamber mod; that has potential.

otherwise gutting makes zero sense and has proven to provide losses, not gains.

pdexta 03-19-2013 11:28 AM

It's was horrible gutting the thing and takes forever. Unless you're just ridiculously bored I wouldn't do it again.

FowlerMotorsports 03-19-2013 11:56 AM

What's the advantages of a honda intake or old begi intake vs a stock intake with vics? I can easily weld another intake on to the existing runners, sourcing another intake is the question, but why honda or begi vs a gutted intake?

18psi 03-19-2013 12:00 PM

Dude, check the manifold thread.

Stock IM has a giant bottleneck right behind the tb, and more restrictive runners and stock tb. When you gut it, you're just addressing like 1/4 or less of the "problem".

Honda mani the plenum is better, the runners are straighter, there is no crazy bottleneck, etc.

Older begi is not bad and similar but IMO the honda has a better/smoother design.

Get a blox or skunk2, splice together like everyone else, run 65mm tb and profit.

FowlerMotorsports 03-19-2013 12:08 PM

Guess I missed that thread

FowlerMotorsports 03-19-2013 12:37 PM

My buddy has a b series intake ( a skunk2 knock off) he will give me for free, would that be a good investment?

18psi 03-19-2013 12:47 PM

LOLOL redundant question is redundant

FowlerMotorsports 03-19-2013 12:52 PM

Easy killer I know nothing on these intakes lol

thenuge26 03-19-2013 12:56 PM

So read that excellent thread about those intakes.

18psi 03-19-2013 12:57 PM

Lets see:

- you have a spare stocker to hack up for free
- you have a spare honda to hack up for free
- you can weld it yourself for the cost of wire/gas
- ????
- The answer is......

....no definitely don't do it:giggle:

FowlerMotorsports 03-19-2013 01:02 PM

Question is about the b series intake, is it equally as good as a skunk or blox? Now that im off for lunch I can get off this dam phone and research lol

junk2 is a knockoff. blox is a knockoff of that. etc etc etc

Who cares. Its all still superior and an upgrade from our IM's.

DO EEET

Braineack 03-19-2013 01:07 PM

the skunk2 and blox are just replicas of the ITR IM.
