How do you determine if one should order standard bearings or oversized?

 

Fortunately the Miata uses a forged crank so usually during tear down we find that the OE bearing has done its job and pulled any contaminates away from the crank, leaving it in great shape.

If you have had work done to the crank such as an aggressive polish or bearing material needed to be removed from a spun bearing failure - you'll find that these processes may have removed a small amount of material from the crank and might require an oversized bearing to meet clearance specs.

In short you should measure but unless something happened to the crank we find that 90% of our customers will require a standard sized bearing.
