Default M.net: Oh my turbo sounds too loud....

Like what do they expect with a turbo and an open intake, for it to be freaking quite like a 3 cly geo metro?

I bet the intake in that cube of aluminum is pretty noisy. Cubes = nasty resonances. Remember sympathetic frequencies and contructive interference from HS physics?

IMO, a better mod would have been to line the heatshield with heat barrier to reduce resonances (and increase heat protection), and drill hole in the fender to change the interior shape and provide a cold air source.

Anyway, I've been having too much fun poking at Jeff Anderson and a couple of the mods there to care.

I'd much rather hear my intake whooosh than my exhaust.

I know how to make the quietest airbox.... I just don't have time.

large turbo inlet pipe --> large airbox / panel filter --> huge curved horn.

The horn will make noise go away. most of the intake noise is from the pressure gradient at the inlet being too steep. the horn makes it nice and smooth and ideally the inlet velocity at the centerline is... zero. no intake velocity, no noise!

"Any suitable aftermarket speaker suitably connected to actual as-built OEM wiring constructions should provide reasonably well audio reproduction in so much as the person who suitably wields a reasonably substantial crimping tool may such forth and indeed use such tool to firmly make suitable connections and will produce reasonable reproduction suitable to typical miatas."

I laughed pretty hard while reading this (what ben posted). Sounds like Captain Jack Sparrow.

I was pretty shocked with how much louder the intake was on my car when I switched over to the link and removed the AFM. The spool up noise was a cool novelty at first. Bit if I could get it to be a little stealthier I would.

Wanting a more quiet car while still wanting a fast car doesn't make one an idiot.

what high school did you go to?

i love the turbo spool sound... why would you not want it? i was just remarking to myself the other day how fun it is just to drive around in vacuum listening to it spool and the bov sigh.

:gay: That does sound like Captain Jack. I was mocking Jeff though.

Jay, my turbo is noticably noiser without the AFM too. But I was even more surprised by the change in behavior of the BOV. Instead of a nice "PSSSHHHH SHHH SHH" it now shrieks. It's loud.

Al, shitty public school. That was senior year stuff.

My Bosch BOV was making a really high pitched farting sound. I changed the orientation of it and it helped. Now I mostly get a nice whoooosh, but sometimes when I'm really on it hard and lift I get the really high pitched fart. I didn't think that it had anything to do with AFM removal, I attributed it to changing the BOV from an old one to a newer one (same model). But you could be right on the money.

I hope I don't get mocked as a poseur for wanting a quiet BOV too!

It's so hard not to get annoyed by those m.net folks. They're such pussies compared to here, I'm glad I found this forum first.

Yeah, pretty much sums up a lot of people over there. Especially when you have to describe crimping, get into a debate about crimping with a loser moderator that has no life, or someone has to ask HOW to crimp....Ben's post is classic sarcasim. A beautiful thing.

Classic. A Crimp battle. Jeff is such a geek.

For Miatas constructed for standard audio expect higher than 97% from records maintained, not including MSSS and post-96.5 Miatas. Most of the 3% were found at Miata events over the last decade or so. At some Miata events I've checked and corrected hundreds over the weekend with less record keeping. Most of the 3% found already corrected were from self-installs with very few from professional installations. Professionals seem to just blindly follow incorrect documentation w/o checking for the fouled results.
Argh!!!
