Ive been sticking with Intel for a while now. The main reasons are the good compatibility, and superior single threaded performance. Another big reason is that I normally buy stuff 2nd hand and periodically upgrade before it gets too old and worthless. The Intel CPUs hold their value really well, so this process saves me a lot of money and I still have high performance parts.

Im currently on an i7-6800X Extreme Edition which is the last of the big 2011 socket CPUs. It doesnt overclock very well, but stock for stock it is pretty similar performance to the new Skylake i7s just not as power efficient.
The 6800X and a like-new X99 mobo only cost half what a 7800X and a X299 mobo costs new.

I looked around at a big chunk of boutique builders.

CyberPerformance seems to be the best mix of quality/current components, prices, and builds.

Lesser components are often noticeably more expensive from other builders. With no discernible increase in warranty or support. The extra money seems to be interior lighting and the controls, lighted fans, and custom built to your computer all-in-one cooling systems vs the much cheaper pre-packaged setups. Essentially **** that isn't worth hundreds of dollars.

A brief photographic interlude:

We have things much better today than in the early 1980s.

I seriously did not realize that LAN parties were still a thing.

New to the forum here, currently playing a mix of BF1, Witcher, Doom and some other fun titles (and sadly some fortnite when my non gamer friends want to play). Here are the specs:

i7-7820HK
GTX1070
16GB DDR4 @ 2666MHz
256GB M.2 SSD for boot and game files
1TB 7200 spinny boi for mass storage
Some razer peripherals and a very generic 1080p acer monitor.

If anybody wants to play BF1 sometime I'll happily drop my origin info, its one of my personal favorite games.

Nothing wrong with fortnite. We don't judge. ... In front of you anyway.

I try to play bf1 a bit, though I tend to stick to hardcore servers.

Our clan has a hardcore custom BF1 server. Search for server starting with [TAG] (The Addict Gamers)

I recently installed this GPU. I bought two from Nvidia and sold one. It ended up costing me around $550.

Had no idea we had a PC build thread. I built my new rig right around jan of 2017.

THE BUILD:
CPU: Intel Core i7-6800K Broadwell-E 6-Core 3.4 GHz LGA 2011
MOBO: MSI X99A XPOWER GAMING TITANIUM
CASE: Corsair, Carbide Series Air 540 Silver
PSU: CORSAIR AX1600i 1600W TITANIUM
COOLING: Corsair Hydro Series H110i Extreme (280MM RAD)
RAMZ:Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3000 X2
SDD: Samsung 850 PRO - 512GB
GPU: EVGA 980 TI CLASSIFIED
later added WD black 4TB HDD

THE STORY:
My last computer built in 2006 was still up and running yet despite several overhauls was starting to struggle with some newer games. I started picking out parts/window shopping around November, saw the MSI TITANIUM mobo and loved the way it looked lol. I had never ran a high end MSI board but had built several of their budget boards. That alone made this a "TITANIUM themed" build.I ended up catching the mobo and cpu on bundle at newegg in December. A local computer store here had the GPU "brand new" running a demo computer and sold it to me for $300 for their closing sale. I picked up the rest of the parts through January as they went on sale except for the the PSU. I have learned through experience over the years in the 50+ computer I have built that the worst feeling is upgrading a computer only to find you can't cause your power supply is maxed out. I began hunting for a 1000w+ psu and scored the 1600w TITANIUM on ebay NIB for right at $320, a steal of a deal.

THE PICTURES:

Sorry the last picture is total garbo, its hard to get pics of lighting on a camera but you get the idea.

I currently have it running a 1 over 3 setup (thats four screens total) witha corsair mechanical keybord and mouse and a logitec 7.1 headset.

I'm ashamed to tell MT.net but happy to brag in public... I paid a lot more for my computer then I did my Miata

Cool build. Air 540 was one of my top choices for case until i saw it at the store and realized how big it was. Very well laid out case though.

Not sure why you needed 1000w+ PSU though as you don't have nearly enough components to load it up.

this is the first build I've had with a single video card... a second, or third (or fourth) card will load it down ^_^

So far though it eats every game I throw at it on max settings and with nvidia finally supporting more than two monitors per card I might be ok

(also if I get 10 years out of the psu like I did my old one I'd be tickled to death. never know what the future holds!)

I loved my 540 too until i started seeing wallmounted pcs. The space savings are amazing. Just wish there were more options than the Thermaltake p3 and the p5

I thought about a wall mount (made one for a customer out of acrylic few years back) but omg the dust. the cpu fans and gpu fans get it bad and anything not in their air path get dust build up. with the 540 all the intake fans have filters, they tone down the light and I just rinse them out about once a month. I LOVE all the room behind the mobo too. Its a rats nest of wires... they are just zip tied up and hanging all over the place.
