you don't need one as long as you have the latest Media Player

Loki047 09-26-2007 10:25 AM

go on.

Ben 09-26-2007 10:26 AM

no you don't NEED it, but it's better. like I said, a friend of mine runs it off a standard xp laptop. it will serve its purpose, but is better and easier to use when used as a MCEPC extender.

I've never tried a DIVX file on the xbox, so don't know.

Loki047 09-26-2007 10:36 AM

what video files are you using?

MX_Eva 09-26-2007 10:55 AM

Here's the bottom line. Developers will make games for both systems because it's just smart. So any clear cut advantages one system has over another will for the most part be negated. Anything 360 Fanbois clame the ps3 sucks at will never show as a advantage for x-box because games will be cross platform. However! There are a few exceptions...being of course non-cross platform games and the ability to hold up for the future. In the battle of what isn't just good for the present but also the future the PS3 clearly wins.

It was built to be a 7 year system. Gee I wonder why it's so expensive?? I spend 600 dollars for a system lasting 7 years, or subscribe to the x-box plan and expect to buy a whole new system in 3 years that IS NOT BACKWARDS COMPATABLE!! seriously...wtf? Since X-box is now developing number 3, they force sony to look like they are pulling the same crap because now they have to work on developing the ps4, which is something they weren't supposed to be doing for a while.

Coming back to the "how long will it last" x-box shot themselves in the foot. They have HD drives, but they specifically said they will never have games on HD disks. Whoops...guess who's now getting a crappy version of Unreal 3 because the game doesn't fit on a standard Dvd disk? Mean while there will be a Blue Ray edition of the game that will look as it was intended. Microsoft has already seen the cap of their media, and PS3 won't for a very long time. Which is also why RPG's are sticking to the PS3. The RPG developers want to use long and very intense cut scenes, and long games which they see can only reasonably done on blue ray.

My final comment is just that if you think that 360 is better because it has more games...you're wrong. The orginal X-box had several games that it was working with when it came out..and games kept coming out. All of them sucked with very very few exceptions. (I think to date the only 4 games I've enjoyed on x-box are Halo, Halo 2, Project Gotham 2, and Forza. and I don't even like single player halo) This year Sony will have 300 game titles launch I look forward to several.

Ben 09-26-2007 11:08 AM

i see some mpeg files, i dunno maybe some other stuff too.

Loki047 09-26-2007 11:08 AM

Ok for me its not games. Ill find something on each system im not a fanboy of anything.

But. I want the system to act as a media extender. As long as it will play my video files and music over wireless or ethernet. Thats what im trying to find out. I want the PS3 but the xbox sounds like itll do more of what I want.

If you have a PS3 find this out for me. I dont care on the format. I record in MPEG and can convert to anything. Same thing with ripping DVDs

y8s 09-26-2007 01:18 PM

make you a deal on my xbox 1.

Loki047 09-26-2007 04:28 PM

I agree there, BUT I NEED TO KNOW IF IT WILL PLAY MY STUFF. Myabe ill just get the PS3 since thats what I want, if it does what I want ill keep it. Or back to the store.

Loki047 09-26-2007 05:05 PM

PS3 FTW

All my dvds, tv, all that shit without recoding a thing :) i love it. PLus space isnt an issue so takes the same time as ripping a DVD.

I haven't found anything that my XBox1 won't play. I've watched tons of movies in various formats, youtube, internet radio, etc.

Loki047 09-26-2007 05:46 PM

really? Your xbox1 came with a drive to play HD content? SNAP!!, fuck your xbox1 is even wireless? Double Awesome.

I dont care about youtube. I want to know that it will play what I want, the simpliest way for me to keep my library is in vob format anyways.

The xbox360 is out because I dont care about games. I will find games on every system so thats a moot point.

Comes down to looks. PS3 FTW
Capabilitus. equal
Price. PS3 FTW

(plus if later i want an HD DVD drive, i can hook it to my media server, and watch it off the ps3 :))

Al Hounos 09-26-2007 05:59 PM

thanks for the link. you just taught me something about my PS3 i didn't know. and you don't even have one yet.

to conclude, PS3>360. 2/3rds of this forum is wrong.:gay:

Loki047 09-26-2007 07:41 PM

Yeah I know :) I want to make a batch file that will do the rename automatically after DVDshrink is finished.

Hint hint programmers

y8s 09-26-2007 08:35 PM

why not make a batch file that runs the dvdshrink in command line with all the switches or some crap.

Loki047 09-26-2007 08:38 PM

thats a better idea... Anyone?

jay526 09-28-2007 05:43 AM

Ps3 for me...

Al Hounos 09-30-2007 02:06 PM

I just set up my tversity server and it works great! This is awesome! I'm streaming .avi's! I love lots of shows you cant see on tv here! I download all the TV I watch! Now I can watch it on a TV! Cool!

Loki047 09-30-2007 05:25 PM

yeah thats what Im using :)

Tremiata 10-12-2007 08:03 PM

Instead of starting a new thread I will just bump this up in case anyone is interested.

Unreal Tournament 3 demo is out today. Plays good on my laptop but my home system choked (old work pc). I am building a system next week when the parts all arrive with q6600 and 8800gtx that will definitely play it.

What? I was a HUGE GT3/GT4 whore, and I said nothing would ever knock those games off their pedestals. I tried Forza2 and I'm in love. Laguna Seca, Nurburgring, Road Atlanta, and Sebring, and that's just the tracks my friend has unlocked. Drifting is a lot more realistic, and I love the motor swap options. Halo 3 sucks my left nut. Whoever decided that moving the reload button was an acceptable idea should be hanged.

What's wrong with the bumpers? I have a ton of complaints about Halo 3, the reload button placement is not one of them.

Still a good game.

bripab007 10-13-2007 09:11 AM

360 has more good games out right now than the PS3.

Down the road, PS3's got GT5 coming, but 360's got Forza 2 already (not to mention Halo 3 and others)...plus Mass Effect is coming to 360.

PS3 can run a separation bootable partition with Linux, though, which means it'll be able to run the new Linux builds of Xbox Media Center (I know, they need to come up with a new name for it if it's going to be cross-platform).

but can you run xbox games? cuz then why would anyone buy an xbox :)

rmcelwee 10-13-2007 09:55 PM

Sold my 4 Xbox 1's a few days ago for $1100. Bought XBox 360 #3 yesterday for $255 and XBox 360 #4 yesterday (a few hours later) for $80. It has something wrong with the DVD player. Since a new one is only $50 at most I'll have $130 in it. Not too shabby. I should be up and running for 4-way Halo 3 (system link with each person having their own monitor) or GRAW2 in a few days.

Sweet.
Have you tried a BluRay yet?

No not yet. Is it that much better then HD TV?

Ben 10-14-2007 11:48 AM

It will look at least as good as HDTV, if not better, dending on stuff. It'll make a standard DVD look like shit.

y8s 10-14-2007 11:51 AM

it really depends on the disc and the mastering. people bitched like nuts when fifth element came out on bluray because it was worse than the original dvd.

Ben 10-14-2007 11:57 AM

yeah, just like SACD, if it wasn't done well it can be really bad to a videophile. but honestly, regular Joe Blow wanna be videophile would still think it's kick ass.

I still buy superbit DVD's whenever possible. I'm too cheap to buy a HD DVD player, and sb dvds are pretty kick ass.

Philip 10-14-2007 12:14 PM

I've been tempted to get an HDDVD upgrade for the xbox because they're cheap, and for the novelty of it. no chance in HELL I'm shelling out the money for a blueray.

Loki047 10-14-2007 08:16 PM

Im gonna get an HD drive for xbox for my computer :) have the best of both worlds, and I bet soon well see support on PS3 for usb HDDVD drives sweeeeet

Ben 10-14-2007 09:55 PM

I was holding out for a 360 w/ an on board HDDVD drive... but now I just don't give a shit anymore. I saw Transformers last night, but the last movie I saw before that was 300 in mid July. So 1 movie ea 3 mos.

Loki047 10-14-2007 10:10 PM

oh snap 300 is in blu ray? Awesome.

MX_Eva 10-15-2007 01:02 AM

Both I believe...I don't recall however. There have been so many things that seems like they should have swayed blue ray or HD one way or another. For me I thought it was a clincher that Sony will obviously not release a HD movie, and on top of that Disney said they would be supporting Blue Ray and not HD. Yet movies come out HD dvd. I feel like HD survives only because the "brand" recognition is already there. People feel like HD is what they are supposed to be looking for. So when someone mentions blue ray they think it's inferior or it sounds confusing etc. IMO, we have an HD player...I wouldn't get one, disks go bad so easily, there's no scratch protection on HD disks and small scratches or even the slightest factory flaw ends up messing with too much data.

On the other hand, because our Patent system is broken to hell and back, Sony is getting sued over their scratch protection...and after they sit for awhile (after being opened and exposed to ??) they grow mold...??????

Loki047 10-15-2007 08:00 AM

link?

Loki047 10-20-2007 05:25 PM

alright so my second ps3 broke. Im moving onto xbox elite, anything i should be aware with the 360s?

mazda/nissan 10-20-2007 05:31 PM

broke? what did u do???

mazda/nissan 10-20-2007 05:32 PM

and yeah the elite looks badass

black is slimming :bigtu:

jwarriner 10-20-2007 05:39 PM

I hope you have a TV capable of 1080p if you want to compare BluRay and HDDVD. Mine is only capable of 1080i.

As for 360 vs. PS3, for me the decision was easy. Halo 3 will never be on the PS3 and I've been a Halo Nerd since 2001. But otherwise I see the PS3 as ridiculously overpriced, not that the price of the 360 is not ridiculous, it is.

mazda/nissan 10-20-2007 05:55 PM

Wii FTMFW!!!!! (unless your wanting to do what Loki is)

Loki047 10-20-2007 06:35 PM

yeah its 1080p how do i get wireless without shelling out the 100 bucks for the MS adapter.

Ben 10-20-2007 06:38 PM

get an older linksys WRT54G router off ebay for cheap, dump DD-WRT firmware into it, and set it up as a wireless bridge.

Thanks, but Im way to impatient to wait. Plus WRT54Gs are only 50, can i do it with a new router?

cjernigan 10-20-2007 08:29 PM

dlink AP100+ will do a wireless bridge as well.

yeah, it's just easier on the older ones. follow the directions and it's not a big deal though. i've done it a couple times. works good.

Pitlab77 10-21-2007 11:13 AM

just picked up a used 360 from my buddy (who babies his electronics) for a steal since he wanted to pick up a Halo3 Edition 360

:bigtu: and Halo 3.

Al Hounos 10-21-2007 12:33 PM

seriously, how the hell did you "break" two PS3s? Did you take it backpacking or something?
