360
Halo3 on Tuesday!!! |
Never played either. I just know 360 is supposedly badass, specially if you can load games on the hard drive. Only reason i would want PS3 is for the blu ray capability though you pay extra for that. I think the graphics kickass on both.
|
PS3 is too much $$ and graphics are hardly better at least at the moment. The controllers don't even vibrate.
|
Either one is Free, so price isnt an issue. I want some sort of HD player either HDDVD or BluRay, so im guessing the price is even.
|
360...halo 3 and the new GTA :)
|
PS3. Blu-ray will hopefully beat out HD DVD in a few years (looks like it may be heading that way).
It's also cheaper if you take into account that it comes with wireless built in and Blu-ray. HDMI port too. I think a 360 would cost about 650$ to have the same capabilities. on the downside there arent hardly any games out yet for it. GT5 comes in october or november. |

Oh this might change things, I want to eventually use the console for a media center (through wireless)
|
xbox games have always been a little too non-realistic, the motion sensor in the controller is cool (not wii cool but still), and ps3 is newer. But shouldn't Gran Tourismo 5 sell the deal? (even though i haven't passed 50% on the last two yet)
|
When GT5 comes out I might spring for a PS3, as it stands I have a 360 elite for Forza2 and DiRT.
|
360. It has Forza 2. Best driving game ever.
|
All my friends swore I would give up GT4 if I tried Forza 2. Tried it, no real tracks, worse graphics, lame vinyl on the cars.. only thing better is that Forza has crashes. Whoopty doo.
I'll take a PS3 when GT5 comes out. |
I vote for 360, because of halo 3. and bio-shock, but that might be on ps3 too?
|
oh yeah, and my friend with a 360 has had to send it in twice because of the red ring thing.... doesn't have that japanese build quality the PS3 does.
|
I voted for ps3, for standard hdmi outputs, blueray, better controllers, and more storage.
not that i've owned a gaming system since turbo graffix 16 |
360 works well as a media manager (a friend of mine is doing it)
and is kick ass as a xp media center extender (i do that) i'd get the elite at $450 and then the hd drive at $179 if desired the elite has on board hdmi and a 120gb hd i have one of the original 360 premiums. i've not had a problem, but others did have issues with the first gen equipment. microsoft increased the warranty duration for 2 years for the launch systems. don't know if that applies to the new systems as well though. i wouldn't get too caught up in blueray vs hddvd. both are eventually going to loose out, but both are pretty kick ass for now and have a good selection of titles. a lot of new movies are coming out on both. blockbuster is carrying some hddvds now too. |
I have an XBOX 360, great games. Horrible console. My original xbox was a tank, never crashed, never any issues whatsoever, same as everybody else I know with one.
The 360 however, EVERYBODY has some sort of issue with theirs , ranging from scratching games (wtf!) to 3 rings of death, to blah blah blah. Thank you QA department at microsoft. |
Having worked at GameStop all summer I have to say without a doubt go wiht the 360. Ben pointed out alot of the things that the 360 has that puts it on par with the ps3, but there is more. The HD-DVD player is usb on the 360. That means it will also plug into your computer and let you rip movies. PS3 with blueray cant do that. As for the warrenty on the 360 it has been extended to 3 years from when you buy the system. While yes the 360 might break Microsoft has been very very good at replacing them with out asking questions.
For games the 360 wins hands down. Not a single thing is out on the PS3 that is better then its copy on the 360. The 360 also has a ton more exclusives at this time. The only game coming out for ps3 that is an exclusive worht buying is GT5 and currently that has no ETA on when it will be out. Every other game you will want on the 360. I will admit that the hardware wise the PS3 is a much better system, but sony compeltely messed up its launch. the PS3 wont start to shine for another 2-3 years in which it will start to blow 360 away. The only problem with that is Sony has set them self up to have to keep the PS3 around for the next 8-9years. This gives microsoft a big advantage that in 5 years it can drop a new console that will destroy the ps3 and their isnt much that Sony can do about it. |
Does the media extender play all types of codecs?
And is the xbox wireless? (basically I have a media server, and I would like the console to grab TV, music, and movies and play it on my tv) |
360 for me, Gears for now, Halo 3 tomorrow, and Battlefield 3 next year.
|
I have a Wii and a PS3 and have extensive experience w/ the 360. Overall the 360 has more games, and a great UI. Its a console primarily ruled by first person shooters (OMgZ HAl0 and BioSHOCK!). Thats about where the good things stop. The graphics and "future" capability of the PS3 far exceed that of the 360, since no one is really programming for the 7 cores and yet the games are either on par or better then 360. Now that Sony has provided first party assistance to third party programmers, more games should be out soon. Furthermore, the 360 does have an HD-player and as noted above it is USB. HOWEVER, because its USB it cannot transfer HD-audio fast enough over the USB ports. I never regret buying my PS3 (unlike Wii) because the games that I do have are amazing. Warhawk is probably one of the most fun online games I've ever played. Whoever said PS3 does not rumble, clearly is not up on the news. The rumble controllers come out this coming month with backwards support in the games. Buy the PS3, enjoy the games that are out now, and watch for developers to unlock the power of the PS3 in the future.

Newb, does your pS3 recognize music or vidoes from a shared server?
|
No, not at the moment, but thats only because I have not tried. When my girlfriends laptop is on my wireless network it gives me the option to tap her PC if I wanted to. I should look into this.
|
Or a PC running media software with a bigass HD. Then you'll have total control of your architecture- hardware and software. I'm currently using a home built pc with dvi out to my 720p 55". All music, video, photos, dvd movies and TV shows reside on the hard disk thanks to media/pvr software. I don't have the juice for any serious games but then again I've only got about $400 in the pc.

the PS3 is really the only "next gen" system, for what that's worth. if having technology is important it's the winner. if having bajillions of games is important then the 360 is. but once some devs realize the potential and figure out how the F to program for it, the PS3 will have a huge edge. and then there's Time Crisis 4. http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/action/t...30&mode=recent you hold a gun and that's your controller. |

And is the xbox wireless? (basically I have a media server, and I would like the console to grab TV, music, and movies and play it on my tv) it's not wireless. you can add a wireless adapater if you want. but the real solution is to run an ethernet cable (lazy ass!) it integrates prefectly with a xp mce pc the ps3 is better hardware. i'll probably get one in a year or two. right now the 360 has the games. i'll have halo3 tonight. so if the cops don't get finished today... it might be a while :) |
I have 6 XBoxes (four 1's and two 360's) and I'm getting ready to buy a third 360 today. So, I think you know how I voted...
|
I had a PS3 then sold it for 2300 on launch day. I have a 360 with the HD drive, and wireless, and all the good stuff. Gears of war is awesome, Forza 2 is great, Test drive unlimited is Fun. I love my 360, xbox live is nice too, a great functional network.
While in UAE, I borrowed a friends PS3 for a few months, I gave it back to him when I got a PSP, it was more entertaining than the PS3(Also there were more games for it cheaper.). Blueray is nice and all but if someone has not said it yet, SONY HAS NEVER WON A FORMAT WAR. Ahem.... Beta, MiniDisk, UMD, and they always try so hard to force it on people. With the 360, you can go buy it now, and get some great bargain Bin games, like dead rising, and other cheap "platinum hits." Sony not so much. I may get a PS3 after GT5 comes out, but it will be only for that. Also try this, goto EBGames, click on 360 or PS3. Then select all. The PS3 only has 256 games and accessories available, while the 360 has 506 products available, nearly double. |

I have a media server that acts for everything, ie PVR, music, photos, movie database. That way I can pull whatever I want when I want from any number of computers. IE my gf watches her Top Chef while I watch Heroes or something. I just need a " media outlet" to hook up for my 46" Samsung 1080p ;) Where can I find what PS3 plays off a server? |

First game on the PS3 search was on page 4 (Enchanted Arms) So i wouln't necessarily use qty of stuff available as any indication of quality games available. the original Xbox has a LOT of junk available. |
one of the bartenders i work with has taken his 360 back four times because it started fucking up. Best buy insursance ftw!

Can you set it to a list of directories? how does it interface with the server?
|
360 is much better imo, im just gonna list 3 games
gears of war Forza2 HALO3 lets see ps3 top those.....gears won game of the year, forza2 took best racing sim, and well halo 3 is a the most anticipated video game of all time. ps3 would be cool if they didnt take forever putting out the system and making it so expensive cause they lost most of their really good looking launch titles, like assassins creed |
forza thpppt :( no offense between GT and Forza, forza is a joke. (gears is the only game im upset about)
Never got into the Halo games. So far they seem equal, how the system looks plays a factor as everything is in the open. Ill just try one, if it doesnt work like i want to the return line, but keep the ideas flowing |
One of my neighbors is a lead developer for RockStar, and works simultaneously on the PS3 and Xbox platforms these days.
While from a development standpoint both systems present significant challenges insofar as memory allocation and workload distribution among cores, he describes the architecture of the PS3 as "retarded." No fixed <-> float operations in the microcode, difficult DMA structure, poorly organized development environment... Not to say that the software which is ultimately released for the machine will be inferior or buggy, but there's a good chance it will tend to be late, and that the programmers will secretly hate you. |
I'm buying halo3 tomorrow, you should be jealous.
|
Joe, But what does he like to play?

but it lists whatever folders are there and you just scroll through them. it lists under photos, video, or music sections basically. I pointed it to my itunes folder for example and it just lists the folders there (artist name). |
what about video playback? I can record in anything so its not a big deal
If you use a HTPC do you run your cable through it with a IR blaster of just run basic channels? |

If you use a HTPC do you run your cable through it with a IR blaster of just run basic channels? i dont really use the HTPC as an HTPC. just enough to make it "never" really. It's more of a file server with a video card. I use directivo. |
Basically you run the output of your box, to the input of of your comp, run the comp to the tv. The computer will have a IR transmitter, small little thing that you place over the cable box reciever. The ir blaster will run through different IR codes to get your box, then all the controls run through the TV.
Ill do it when I have some more time. Not good for video games because of the video lag, but fine for watch TV |
to be honest the games i'm most excited about are coming to both consoles.
GTA4 Mafia 2 Assassin's Creed I'm glad I have the blu-ray though, along with it just being a really high quality (inside and out) system. GT5 is a huge PS3 exclusive, I couldn't give two shits about halo. I'll admit I did enjoy gears of war. |
Im sorta pissed the elite doenst even come with a built in HD-DVD drive
|
Refer to what I said previously about the USB connection for HD ;)
|
Is that a hack of it is just a USB HD drive? Ie Ill just buy the drive and the PS3 and be on my way
|
Now that Halo3 is out anyone change thier mind?
|
yeah, i think those with the xbox are sour :bigtu: (suckers)
