Default 1.6 diff swap the other way

SO, I need a 1.8 rear end. I am married and so broke. If I were to buy, say a mk2 for cheap, and steal the 1.8 rear end and related parts, Can I refit my old 1.6 stuff into it and then sell the car? It would all fit right?

A bit of a slimy thing to do I will admit, but I promise I'll sell it to a 40yr old woman who will never know the difference.

Thoughts?

A diff would be much cheaper than a car...

You could advertise that it's lighter.

Thanks for the info. I am thinking I may buy a cheap car, take what I need and either part out the rest or throw my old bits on and sell as is. The cost of a 1.8 diff and related parts is near enough £350 here and frankly I have seen whole cars go for £500 so it seems like the best way forward. With a bit of luck I may even end up in profit

If you have the space to part it out...try that, you will end up with a lot of extra ****, but you can make some really good money if the car is in OK shape to start with.
