Default 1.8 engine differences / WTB

I was just wondering what the differences are in a block for a 1.8 liter engine? I have a 99 that is in need of rings, so I am planning a block rebuild / pistons, rings, and rods for this winter while my car sits in the garage. I was thinking about buying another complete block right now, so I can start my build, and then just swap the parts out later instead of removing my engine, gutting it, getting it machined, and then putting it back together. But if I buy a 94-97, 00-04 1.8, is it the same as my 99? Does anybody have a 1.8 block for sale? I am looking for mainly just a block, and a crank. Thanks guys.

01+ block has a main bearing support.
94-95 have a oil feed port on on the exhaust side

Since you say that you're going to do pistons and rods, then the OEM difference on those parts don't mean anything to you. If price wasn't an issue, I'd get an 01+ block and then drill/tap a similar oil hole to the 90-95 block for ease of oil feed line routing.

94-95.5 will have potentially the 8.8 compression....
95.5-97 will have the higher 9 to 1.

If you are installing pistons, rings, etc... not as important. Using the 99 head is good, cause with an 01+, you'll have to deal with the VVT.

01+ get the Main bearing support bracket though...... Need an 01 pan.

Exhaust will bolt up.... and you should be able to swap over all the sensors....

Another option if you want a "cheap" source for a 1.8 is the escort/protege fwd BP configs. Since you are going to need to swap the oil pan and head from your car anyway (when you do the swap), it could get you a cheap place to start.... then add all your other stuff on top.
