I seriously doubt there will be enough thermal transfer in the pipe to make a measurable difference.

Autoparts stores here sell air intake hose (like the stuff on older american cars under the hood) that works fine. It's the spiral wire type hose that extends and bends.

I'll be fabbing up my ducts this weekend.....I need to drill the dust shields and tack weld the bungs. Then fab intake ports for the existing cutouts I've made in the bumper. Have had this project on hold for too long, and Hallett is around the corner. Will take pics.....

fwiw- I've never used any of those fancy vented shields. We just removed the oe shields and aimed the hose end at the caliper, securing it with some zip ties. Never failed in a racing environment... but not really pretty either. ;)

Machismo 08-01-2008 01:02 PM

Sounds like it works just fine. Might save me time with some tacking for initial install. I'm not too worried about pretty either.....I am not M.net material. :)

No, but the extra thickness makes it harder to make tight bends and it takes up more room.

What about metal bends for rain gutters. They are somewhat rectangular like the R type spoiler opening. The 90 bends could be cut off at whatever angle you need.

cueball, I've got my fans (two stock fans right now, two ebay slims later) hooked up to a toogle switch. turn the car on, turn the fans on. its that easy. no worries about when what fans come on and why or where. great for cooling the car between sessions cause I can just leave them on so I don't carry any heat from previous sessions. but I agree, if you're at track speeds, the fans aren't pulling air through the radiator faster than the speed you're driving. look into putting 100% in your system for the day, and getting rid of your ps/ac/cruise/carpet/pass seat/pl/pw/abs/vagina. your car is over working itself hauling that shit around.

cueball1 08-02-2008 12:03 PM

But I like my vag!

I don't get how this is necessary. I think your car should be able to keep itself cool, regardless of session length.

Either enough air is going through a big enough radiator to run for hours on end, or its not and needs help.

cueball1 08-02-2008 03:39 PM

Hustler,

If your temps are climbing during a session it would help to bring the temps down as low as possible between. Moving hot are out of the engine bay while the car is parked and turned off sounds like a good idea to me. Whenever I park between sessions I open the hood to help vent hot air, using the fans to move hot air out is the same idea.

The full throttle, full brake, full turning g's, repeat - that happens at the track adds a lot of heat sources the car wouldn't get ordinarily, you know that. Brakes, Wheels, engine, intercooler, piping, exhaust, water, etc. all capture, create or give off heat. Those fans blowing while the car sits keeps everything from just sitting there cooking. I like the idea. Likely won't do it but I like the thinking.

Like I said at the start of this thread. It was amazing the difference in the brakes now the car is FI. Instead of hauling the car down from 95 they now have to bring it down from 120 in the same spot. Those brakes were COOKING. Even though the fans don't blow toward the brakes just having air moving would have to help cool them off.

m2cupcar 08-02-2008 05:22 PM

right- the coolant temp in the engine actually goes up after you turn the car off and park it because it's getting heat soaked. The moving air is what keeps this from happening. But there's usually plenty of time between sessions at most events for the rise to happen and cooling to then commence. Even when in the midst of heat soak, if you started the car back up the fan(s) would come on bring the temps back down.

hustler 08-02-2008 05:43 PM

I didn't think of heat-soak while it was sitting there. duh

I'd e-thug myself for that if I knew how.

Wow, I was right about something. Cool.
