On 9'' 6UL's, under rolled fenders, with the Tein Mono Flex (so whatever height I need). I know you can fit a 225/45/15, but I can't seem to find anyone running a 225/50. Reason for the 50's is I don't need a competition tire, just a decent performance street tire that will last me more than a few thousand miles and won't ride like ****. I like my Falken 912's in 205/50, so I figured I would give them a shot. These are just for now, while I'm still having to daily drive the Miata. Eventually I will either go R1R or R-S3's, when I don't have to drive it all the time and will punish it on a bit more of a regular basis.

This may not matter though, I'm thinking I will eventually do small front and rear flares to open it up a bit, but not right now.

I don't see why they won't fit, I just felt like making a thread...

Here is a different question since nobody liked my first one. How will 225's on 8'' compare to being on 9'' wheels? Sidewalls on the 8's always look too vertical to me, but many people are running them, so it's apparently not an issue. Answer me or die.

 

1. 225/50s rub if you are lowered
2. 225s work on 8s, they work better on 9s
2.5. you have aids
3. get 225/45 R1Rs or something.

 

Seriously, there are many threads about this very tire size. Who cares if it fits, it's going to look like ***.

Well, fail on me. I searched and didn't find much, so I must fail at searching as well. I guess what would be smart on my part, which for some reason just occurred to my dumb ***, is to simply buy the 9's, 225/45 R1R's (or something) and then keep my 6.5'' Helium wheels, and get some new 205 tires for it and use those for the road. My main reason was a rush, because I need new tires. Two sets of wheels would solve all of my issues. Or maybe if I'm baller enough, just get a set of 8's with 205's for the street, and the 9's for the track. Again, for trying to make a multi purpose wheel/tire combo.

225's, probably yeah. I feel that 205's on my 6.5'' are pushing it, so I know 225's on 7's would be a bit of a stretch (or reverse stretch). They may fit, but you will have tons of sidewall flex, since the sidewalls will basically be curving back inward towards the wheel. That may even be dangerous, as there would be so much negative force on the bead under cornering.

 

That sucks. I like my team dynamics pro race 2's. I was planning on having them powder coated when i get the car painted. Paying for new wheels on a street car seems pointless when the current one are good.

 

I mean, it may "work"... but I wouldn't. Then again, I started this thread and asked retarded tire related questions, so I may not be creditable.

FYI, the R-S3 in that size has an overall width of 8.9'' and a tread width of 8''. So you can imagine putting that on a 7'' wide wheel is less than ideal... Tire Rack does say 7'' is within "range" for that size though.

225/45/15 should fit without rubbing on an NB w/ 15x9's?
The car in question is mine and it does have rolled rears

 

Per Emilio's site, 15x9 w/ 225/45 is bolt-on on NBs. You might rub a swaybar or a control arm at absolutely full lock, but fenders should be no issue.

i.e. they fit, much like hustler's junk in your mother's trunk.

 

it all fits! is it optimum or not is another story. is there a huge difference? is another story.

here's 225/50/15 bfg r1's. they were absoultely glued to the track. no they were not dangerous on a 6.5'' rota slipstreams. of course i would have wanted a wider wheel, but it's what i had at the time.






the answer to the op's original dilema is to just buy rs3's in a 225/45/15. they will last a long time. especially just mostly daily driving.

 

I had 225/50's on 7" wheels. The sidewalls did bulge a bit, and I could tell BARELY that the car felt a little softer, but my only other tires were 195's on the stock daises, so the huge jump in grip easily made up for it.

When I lowered my car with kyb shocks, FM gen II springs, and FCM top hats/bump stops, I had issues with rubbing as Sav said. .66" spring spacer made that stop, along with using a piece of pipe and the baseball bat fender rolling trick. I'm not sure if that did anything though. Main issue was the back, but I spaced up the front since it was having some issues when going over bumps in the middle of a turn.

Few years later I down graded from 225's to 195's on my 15x7s, and the spacers in the front have come off, and eventually I'll do the rears, but I'm a little more worried about those. I have a suspicion that the rubbing was more due to the weird offset of my wheels, not the tire width/profile. 45 vs. 6ul 43, I think. Not a big jump, but neither is 45 to 50 tire profile.

my rota's were 40mm offset. didn't rub anywhere, although i didn't have liners and i bent the tabs up. 12.5'' ride height. those pics were august '08. i now have 15x9's and 225/45's. i started to do the baseball bat roll, but wasn't efficient, so i grabbed a metal cutting blade for my jigsaw and sawed off the lips. the right blade and cutting speed (jigsaw is adjustable) made super clean cuts and tires clear hella. oh yeah,

 

This post and the one above it pretty much answers my question, and makes up my mind. 225 rs3's are going on. What were the specs of the spacers you used?

 

I asked kindly and FCM sent me a rough sketch with dimensions of the spacers. I had them whipped up at work. One of aluminum, one of UHMW. My lathe guy "screwed up" and made one set .6", so he went and found the UHMW to make the correct .66" I asked for, but I didn't care, I ended up using both sets anyways.

At one point they were being sold on FCM's site, along with top hat spacers, I haven't looked recently.
