6 speed MS trans
Is a MS 6 spd trans worth 1100 shipped?

if you vote, post a bump

I see the tranny generally going for about $700+/- $100. Figure freight to be $100-150.
Unless your power ambitions are high, get a 5 speed; you'll be happier with the ratios. |
The only reason i would want a 6spd is if i was going to swap the 6th gear for a something with a taller ratio. The strength of the 6spd is nice, but do you need it.
If you want a taller ratio, you should swap your ring gear and pinion for something like a 3.6 or w/e people were discussing recently. |
I will need the strength and I guess the MS 6 spds are stronger than normal 6spds
|
I am unaware of any differences in the tranny. The MS does have beefier axles than non MS cars, making the rear swap a little more enticing. Not that I've ever heard of an axle snapping though.
You'll want a 3.6 R&P if you get the 6 speed. 1st is pretty useless, you might be better starting in 2nd. |
Starting in 2nd with the 5spd is nice when accelerating quickly. With the stock 4.10 or 4.3s my '99 has. Pretty sure it's 4.10.
|
I love the gearing with my 5speed trans and 3.90 rear. Can't imagine shortening it with a 6speed trans or 4.10/4.30 rear.
Now 2nd gear gets me just over 60mph |
paul i just got the 3.9 for my 5 speed also however its not installed yet. Just curious what a couple of your gears do (mph) especially 1st,3rd, and 4th of you dont mind

brb... |
My miata is still NA, but in my old GTI turbo, it liked the longer gear ratios so you could stay in the boost longer in each gear. I kind of like the idea of the 5-speed w/ 3.9 - you should be producing plenty of torque so no wories about the 1st-gear launch.
When I was on the Vortex, you should have seen all the whiny posts from the guys with 337's and other special-edition models that had 6-speeds with shorter ratios. Apparently(they said) 5-speeds put up better 0-60 and 0-90 numbers because ratios forced an extra upshift for the 6-speeds. |
OK, results from my TomTom which I've determined is pretty accurate once it catches up so that meant trying to keep it right at the rev limit which is pretty tricky.
5 speed 94 trans 3.90 Torsen 215/45/15 tires which are a bit smaller than 205/50/15's 1st- 37mph 2nd- 63mph 3rd- 90mph* 4th- 118mph* When I get the thing on a dyno I'll post those numbers. *uhhh, these speeds were reached on a closed course, not a public roadway ;) |
Paul, did you have a GPS on that "track event" or were you using the stock speedometer?
|
fuck that 'closed course' bullshit, we're not pussies here
Here, I'll make you feel more comfortable, "I've had my car to rev limit in 5th gear on a public highway on multiple occasions." |
I did it not 1/2 a mile from my house hell. If you have enough hp it comes up pretty quick

under 300 rwhp, not worth it.
over 300 rwhp, questionable. |
I have a rebuilt 5-speed and 3.90s. Excellent combo for my engine's output. I'd only consider the 6-speed if the engine makes enough that reliability is a concern, but then I'd want a set of 3.63s instead of the 3.90s. With the 3.90s, first gear has a use. Cruising rpms are a bit lower as well. I think the longer one waits to get a 6 speed, the lower the prices may become as more cars with them wind up in the boneyard.

I got mine for $650 shipped. My power goals are very ambitious.
|
I saw the last one on ebay go for like 700, theres no voting option for "That shit is overpriced, wait and get a different 6 speed"
