For now the car has no oil cooler but we'll add a very small Setrab with -10 push on hoses and Mocal thermostatic sandwich plate. |

Which hose, and which connectors, would this be referring to? I'm about to start ordering stuff for my oil cooler setup.

Understood. I was just looking for a recommendation on fittings & hoses as I'd rather not go stainless if I have an equivalent option that won't abrade through stuff, and I'm not sure which push-on connectors are actually worthy of track duty on a car that sees ~1200 miles of track time a year.

Update on the 95R
Spring 2012 I bent all the valves at MRLS. Mechanical over rev. Probably 9200rpm. Engine rebuilt with a bit more preload in valve springs. Fall 2012 we blow it up again at Hallet. Mechanical over rev again. January 2013 we buy a good JDM NB2 engine off an ebay seller in Canada and drop it in as is. Adaptronic comes out. MS3pro going in. Haven't dynoed it yet but I suspect it will be around the same 147whp or so. |

Mechanical over rev is upshifting to a lower gear instead of a higher gear like say going for 4th at 75mph and getting 2nd. Of which I have proven expert :bang:
Others might find it helpful, though: 1 - 2: thumb up, palm facing driver side 2 - 3: push forward with heel of palm 3 - 4: thumb down, palm facing passenger side 4 - 5: push forward with heel of palm The idea is that, especially on the 3-4 shift, the "preload" of your arm is to away from the "danger zone." |

I had a friend blow an engine that way in an E36. He found the cause to be transmission mounts that would flex under heavy acceleration and "locate" 2nd where 4th is supposed to be. Or at least he says. Can anything be done on a Miata to minimize this effect? I know we don't have transmission mounts but still. Basically, I don't want to money shift it anytime soon. |

Harder engine mounts and differential mounts help with that. Solid mounts eliminate it.

Have stiffer engine and diff mounts in the car already and I would assume Emilio does too. Still seems to happen though.

There's always the chance, but good shift technique (backhand your 3-4s, don't rush your 4-5s) and just slowing your shifts down a little bit can help a lot.
|
If you have stiffer and still do it put solids in it?

Anyone ever gotten 2nd instead of 4th when doing the 5-4 downshift? One of our asshat team driver's did that in our RSX a few years ago. With datalog, we calculated something like 11k RPMs. One of the valves was broken and then lodged into the exhaust port. Other valves were extremely boned. But the head of the valve lodged into the port was pretty epic.

In a partially related story, I have a buddy who flat towed his Miata behind an RV at 75 mph down the interstate after his wife left the car in first gear while hooking it up. He drove off down an exit ramp and got up to cruising speed before he saw smoke from the back of the RV, and thought he had popped the motor in it. Went out back to investigate, and found that the rods had all punched out of the block somewhere around 14k rpm, splashed hot oil everywhere and caught EVERYTHING on fire instantly. He had no choice but to unhook the RV, call 911 and watch his Nationals level CSP car burn to a crisp in front of his eyes.
Everybody does something stupid once in a while. I used to regularly 3-2 while autocrossing. I miraculously never hurt anything, but I should have. |
^ Whats crazy is that I heard that story locally a few months ago.
