Bought 15x8 6ULs Need Tires, Want Opinions

Pretty simple really. I bought a set of nickel +36 6ULs and need some rubber for them. I was thinking some 225/45r15 rubber in Hankook RS2s would be nice and are used often with this wheel. Pretty sure savington and Y8s are using these exact tires actually. Anyway Hankook is sold out of the RS2s in this size anyway. Emilio is saying I should go for some RA-1s but I don't have the coin to drop on new ones. What do you guys think I should go for? Anything will be better than the 205s i'm running now. I really don't want to buy a set of tires now only to upgrade to 225s later though. Guess i'm just between a rock and a hard place with hankook running out of my chosen rubber.
Oh yeah, I don't plan on using the 6ULs as track dedicated wheels for the time being. I'll need them more for all purpose whenever/autocross/possible trackday. Then later on I think i'll look into some stockers or something else cheap for roadtrips or something.

Savington 08-08-2007 02:44 AM

Emilio has emptied the 225/45 inventory twice now with his wheel orders. I'd say if you have 205s now, have them mounted on the 6ULs until the 225/45 comes back into stock. Hopefully they're 205/50-15s and not 205/40-16 or 205/55-14.

cjernigan 08-08-2007 02:49 AM

The problem is the whole reason i'm going for the 6ULs is because the wheels that came on my car are 17x7 konig imagines(22lbs) and the tires are 205/45rz17s. Anyway hahahaha they won't fit on the 6ULs or I'd do the swap in a flash.

Savington 08-08-2007 02:52 AM

Nuts. I'd run Azenis, then, and step up to the 225/45 when you wear the Azenis out.

cjernigan 08-08-2007 02:58 AM

Sounds like my best option. So i see Azeni 615s in my future. I just can't imagine driving around town on RA-1s. By the time i did make it to a track day on them they'd be bald(read threads) and hard from all the heat cycles.

could you fit a BFG KD in 225/50-15? rub rub?

If it did, maybe a little more negative camber would solve it?

This is what Emilio has found to work.

99-05 Miata +40 225/45/15 Hankook RS2 fits front and rear, no rubbing. +36 require a little extra camber if ride height is below 12.2" with short body shocks. 245/40/15 fits rear, requires rolled fenders, front requires rolling and rubs slightly at full steering lock. Clears Wilwood BBK with two piece front rotors. Fits 01+ sport brakes. +36 required for early Wilwood brake kits using one piece Corrado rotors. 225/50/15 fits rear with +40 & +36 but does not fit front well. 225/50 in front requires fender roll and a little extra camber.

Man what a kick in the balls.

Savington 08-08-2007 07:28 PM

225/50 is also pretty tall. I'd rather have the 205/50.

Savington 08-08-2007 07:28 PM

Or, you could just keep the 17s on the car until the 225/45 becomes available again.

I'm thinking that's what i'm gonna do. Might be the best way to go. Only downside is I might lose my buyer or the 17s due to taking so long.

Pitlab77 08-08-2007 11:37 PM

there will always be buyers for big wheels

cjernigan 08-08-2007 11:51 PM

Wonder if Emilio will just hold onto my wheels so I can have him mount the RS2s considering he has a decent price on the tires that way he can do all that for me before they ship. That way I don't have to try and stash 4 6ULs in my apartment.

put a piece of glass on them and call it a coffee table.

It would definitely be the most expensive piece of furniture in my apartment.

I have had 205/45s for quite awhile, I don't see them as enough for my personal goals. I happened to get a free set of tires with my Kosei's that were 205/45 and I can't wait for them to die off so I can get some 225s.

y8s 08-09-2007 10:31 AM

225s are probably too skinny for anyone running enough for a built motor. You'll find that when you just drop the gas in 2nd at 4500 that the rear end goes squirrely on you.

messiahx 08-09-2007 10:45 AM

I have the same wheels and the R-S2s from the first run Emilio did last year. I'd wait for the 225/45s to come back in stock. You won't be disappointed.

Dhaark 08-09-2007 11:30 AM

What about edgeracing? I think they have the rs2's in stock. I was looking around to find a 245-255/40r15 but no luck. Does anyone know where to get these tires? Or something to put on: 15x10 6UL when they come out...
