Built Engine, No Start Help

Hello all... Creating this as a follow up to my post in my build thread.

https://www.miataturbo.net/build-thr...mkturbo-90263/

Hoping someone could give some additional direction so i can maybe get the car running tomorrow.

My car is currently sitting at the shop waiting to be started for the first time.

Timing belt has been verified on both the damper side and head., The Crank Position Sensor was slightly off and re-aligned by the shop. Fuel lines are correct. When cranking with the timing light the mechanic said the light was no where near tdc. no start.

There's New spark plugs and the only thing that has changed really is the ati damper with the 4 tooth trigger wheel. I have verified that it is installed correctly.

What do i need to look for ?

Someone suggested cas in my thread - i am going to look into that further as i brought that up with the mechanic and he said that shouldn't make too big of a difference.

Just want to make sure the car gets up and running

Post MSQ please.

You are going to hate me. Pictures of the crank pulley at TDC according to the notch on it. Then a straight on shot of the 2 cam gears lined up perfectly. The a shot of how the front cam lobes are positioned. Are you using a CAS or NB cam/crank sensors?

Not really - I verified at the shop that exact thing - I will take some additional pictures tomorrow on it but i have some from the build - it was slightly off - but i have confirmed they are lined up correctly today aswell while i was at the shop. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...801c3ce759.jpg

I am using the same CAS from my old engine - i did not mark it - not even sure what that means but it was said on my thread.

I need to see the cam lobes. I ask because it is very possible one of the cam gears are off.

I see - I will get this tomorrow morning

But it should run- even with a cam gear off by a tooth. His shop says ignition is nowhere near TDC, presumably meaning they can't even see the timing mark with the strobe.

Can confirm i was told they did not see timing mark with light.

I think he's saying cam gear to cam indexing (the nub) might be off.

This is what I am saying. Go back to my build thread in 2010 and see where I went through all of this myself.

Lars got it. Shop installed the cam gears on the cams wrong. You can actually see the lobes behind the gears in your photo - it's a little hard to picture but look at the visible lobes right behind the gears and then note their location in relation to the cam caps. Those are the #1 cyl lobes, and they are pointed at each other. They're supposed to be pointing away from each other.

The index pin on each cam will go in the slot for the corresponding cam. Intake cam pin goes in the "I" slot, exhaust cam goes in the "E" slot. Right now, your intake cam is in the E slot and your exhaust cam is in the I slot.

I got pretty excited the moment i saw lars reply because i know he was onto something.

Cam gears were installed by yours truly not the shop (they are actually pretty awesome) - I'm just now understanding what i did - I will give them a call in the morning and run over there with the update tomorrow thank you all.

You sir get a cat for that catch

aidandj 10-13-2016 11:17 PM

That's lars' canned response. People always post pictures of the cam gears when we all need to see the cam lobes.

Car is up and running, drove it home at alternating rpms - stopped to get gas and noticed a coolant leak - by the time i got home there was a pool under my car from the begi reroute... Also looks like my timing cover and camshaft seals are leaking

And so it continues.

shuiend 10-14-2016 11:17 AM

Any idea what it was?
